Job summary

Discover Recruitment Ltd is seeking a Controls System Support Engineer to join its engineering team on a permanent basis. The role is based on Ilkeston and UK client sites, with hands-on maintenance, fault finding, commissioning and on-going technical support for PLC, SCADA and HMI systems.

You will troubleshoot across live networks, document work, travel to client sites nationwide, and contribute to system reliability and efficiency.

Qualifications

• Experience supporting, maintaining or commissioning industrial control systems.
• Strong electrical fault-finding and diagnostic skills.
• Experience with PLC systems and programming languages such as Ladder Logic or Structured Text.
• Familiarity with SCADA and HMI systems.
• Understanding of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, Profibus and Ethernet/IP.

Responsibilities

• Carry out planned and preventive maintenance on control systems and equipment.
• Diagnose and resolve electrical, PLC, SCADA, HMI and network faults.
• Provide reactive technical support to customers and respond to breakdowns.
• Support control system installation, testing and commissioning at client sites.
• Carry out pre‑commissioning checks and troubleshoot issues during installation.
• Support system modifications, upgrades and performance improvements.
• Maintain accurate maintenance, fault and commissioning documentation.
• Ensure work complies with relevant safety standards, regulations and company procedures.
• Train and support customer personnel on system operation and basic fault finding.
• Assist with ordering and managing required hardware and materials.

The Opportunity

Discover are partnered with a specialist engineering business delivering complex control and automation solutions across critical UK infrastructure projects.

Following a recent acquisition and the award of several new projects, the business is looking to add a Control Systems Support Engineer to its growing engineering team.

This position will involve providing planned and reactive maintenance, technical support, fault finding and commissioning across client sites throughout the UK.

This is a hands‑on controls role supporting PLC, SCADA, HMI and associated control systems, with a focus on system reliability, troubleshooting and minimising customer downtime.

On-call & travel

• Additional payment per on‑call week.
