Job description

If you’re looking to take an exciting new direction with your HSBC career, an internal move can open the door to many opportunities, allowing you to take on a new challenge, and develop your skills. Bring your knowledge of our brand to a new role and grow yourself further.

We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Control Manager, Protective Security.

Role Purpose

We are seeking an ambitious individual to join the Business Risk and Resilience Chief Control Office (CCO) as Control Manager, Protective Security. The role supports the 1LoD Protective Security team in maintaining strong governance, ensuring risks are identified and remediated promptly.

The CCO enables the bank to operate within its risk appetite by providing non-financial risk expertise, reviewing controls, conducting assurance, and driving a consistent risk culture across ServCo, Operational Resilience, Third Party Management, Business Continuity & Incident Management, and Protective Security.

Protective Security safeguards HSBC’s people, assets, and premises through physical, electronic, and procedural measures, and manages travel risk to protect employees during business travel.

As an HSBC employee in the UK, you will have access to tailored professional development opportunities and a competitive pay and benefits package. This includes private healthcare for all UK-based employees, enhanced maternity and adoption pay and support when you return to work, and a contributory pension scheme with a generous employer contribution.

In this role you will:
  • Advice on Risk & Control: Provide advice on risk and control matters within Protective Security (PS), ensuring compliance with the HSBC Risk Management Framework.
  • Manage Governance: Coordinate PS submissions to upstream governance forums (e.g., BRR, COO Risk & Control Management Meetings). Manage Protective Security Global Governance meetings (agenda, chairing, minutes, escalation).
  • Monitor Control: Collate and quality assure monthly Control Monitoring Plans (CMP), KCIs and effectiveness ratings. Coordinate quarterly Control Owner attestations and Helios uploads.
  • Manage Issue: Track, elevate, and oversee remediation of issues (MSII, Audit, RCA). Ensure timely closure with accountable owners.
  • Support Audit & Review: Partner with regional/market PS leads during Audits, 2LoD reviews and thematic control testing.
  • Manage Information (MI): Produce ad-hoc MI, data analysis, reporting, and interpret trends for risk escalation.
  • Process Reviews: Validate design and operating effectiveness of key controls through walkthroughs, inspections, re-performance and analysis.
  • Manage Culture & Continuous Improvement: Promote positive risk culture, accountability and effective behaviours. Challenge poor or excessive controls and inefficient practices. Share insights to strengthen the global control environment.

To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:

Technical Skills
  • Strong knowledge of Risk Management Framework
  • Non-Financial Risk & Control expertise, including governance and assurance testing. Familiarity with systems such as Helios or equivalent control monitoring tools.
  • Governance paper writing – ability to draft, structure and present formal submissions, escalations and minutes for senior management forums.
  • Knowledge of Protective Security (PS) principles (physical, electronic, procedural, travel risk) and their associated risks/controls.
  • Advanced MS Excel (pivot tables, vlookup, data analysis/visualisation). Ability to analyse and interpret MI for control insights.
  • Competence in PowerPoint and formal report writing for senior stakeholders.
Behavioural Skills
  • Stakeholder Management
  • Communication
  • Coordination
  • Resilience
  • Team Orientation
Cognitive Skills
  • Analytical Thinking
  • Problem Solving
  • Critical Judgement
  • Adaptability
  • Attention to Detail
