Consultant Urologist

We are seeking a passionate and skilled Consultant Urologist tojoin our innovative team at South Tyneside and Sunderland Hospital. This rolefocuses on prostate and bladder cancer services, with a strong emphasis onrobotic surgery.

You will join a high-performing team that has completed over 2,000robotic procedures, aiming for 200 pelvic procedures annually. The postincludes theatre lists, outpatient clinics, flexible cystoscopy, andparticipation in the weekly Urology Cancer MDT. In-house mentoring will supportdevelopment in robotic prostatectomy and cystectomy, with opportunities toengage in robotic reconstructive work.

Our department operates across a wide geographical area in theNorth East, serving a population of 900,000. We are a designated Cancer Centrefor Urology, offering advanced procedures including robotic surgery,cryotherapy, and reconstructive techniques.

Main duties of the job

This post focuses onprostate and bladder cancer services. The successful candidate will join askilled team of robotic surgeons and nurses. Key responsibilities include:

Performingrobotic prostatectomy and cystectomy, with mentoring until independentoperating is achieved.

Deliveringtheatre lists, outpatient clinics, and flexible cystoscopy.

Participatingin the weekly Urology Cancer MDT and wider oncology service.

Engagingin robotic reconstructive procedures, with opportunities for furtherdevelopment.

The post holder willwork alongside 15 Consultant Urologists across the directorate, supportingoutpatient, diagnostic, day case, and inpatient services. Clinics are held atSunderland, Durham, and South Tyneside. The on-call rota is 1:12.

The role includesteaching and training at all levels, contributing to audit and researchprogrammes, and promoting team-based practice and innovation. The post holderis expected to support national audits, recruit to clinical trials, and publishsurgical outcomes. They will also play a key role in shaping servicedevelopment and enhancing patient pathways through collaborative working andevidence-based practice.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will join the existingteam of consultants and will participate in the on-call rota.

Overall responsibilities include theco-ordination and delivery of the strategic and operational aspects of the UrologyServices across Sunderland and South Tyneside and the wider sub-regionalcatchment area. These will reflectNational and Local priorities including the strategic direction of STSFT andthe Directorate of Urology.

The post holder is expected to possessCCT or equivalent and to be on the GMC Specialist Register at the time oftaking up the post.

The post holder is expected to attendDirectorate meetings and take part in Audit and Clinical Governance. Audittakes place monthly on a rolling half day. The post-holder will undergo annualappraisal, as do all medical staff in the Directorate. The post holder willalso be expected to develop the Service in keeping with National guidance.

The Urology Department is accredited forHigher Surgical Training and is regarded as one of the premier training unitswithin the region. Feedback from the Foundation School survey and GPVT schemeis very good.

The Department has an excellent recordof trainees passing post-graduate examinations. There is a representative fromthe department on the Regional Specialty Training committee. The post-holderwill be expected to partake in training of all medical and other staff as wellas undergraduates to ensure trainees have a good training experience.

A well-stocked library with professionallibrarians is situated in the postgraduate medical education centre at the SRHsite. A good number of Urology texts and journals are available.

Newcastle Medical School and itsPostgraduate facilities are 15 miles away. Sunderland University has beenawarded a Medical School with the first intake of student who commenced inSeptember 2019. The department provides educational opportunities for studentsfrom both medical schools.

The appointee will be expected toundergo continuing medical education and appraisal in accordance with theguidelines agreed by the Royal College of Surgeons and GMC and the post-holderwill be entitled and encouraged to take regulatory study leave.

There are also educational links withSunderland, Durham and Northumbria Universities.
