Service Line: Learning Disabilities

Professionally Accountable to: Medical Director

Managerially Responsible to: Operations Director

We are seeking an experienced part‑time (4 sessions/week) Consultant Psychiatrist who will work in our Scottish Residential Learning Disability services and provide senior medical cover to our on‑call rota (1 in 5).

The post holder will be the Responsible Medical Officer and will oversee and maintain the care of all residents as required and will also have responsibility for ensuring the good quality of medical care offered in accordance to GMC standards of good medical practice and other relevant professional guidelines.

In this role, your expertise will be the driving force for life‑changing treatment fully supported by a Specialty Doctor and first‑class multidisciplinary team including qualified nurses, psychologist and occupational therapist.

Main duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead on the provision of high quality care to the service users residing in Scottish residential services
  • Act as a positive role model, maintaining and demonstrating a positive attitude towards patients, their families, visitors and other staff.
  • Take overall responsibility for patient treatment plans in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team
  • Assess referrals & undertake mental state examinations of service users
  • Undertake appropriate investigations, diagnosis & treatment
  • Conduct patient reviews & clinical audits
  • Lead the implementation of risk assessment, risk management & embed clinical governance within the service
  • Produce any required Mental Health Act reports and attend tribunals.
  • Good maintenance of patient records
  • To ensure and maintain regular communications with the Scotland Medical Director and Operations Director
  • To communicate effectively through regular contact with patients, relatives, staff, directors, and any other concerned bodies; maintaining appropriate reports.
  • Attend and contribute to academic meetings and adhere to the professional standards for CPD as set out by the GMC, the Department of Health and the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
  • Contribute to 1 in 5 on‑call rota

We are looking for someone who is...

  • Fully GMC registered & MBBS (or equivalent) qualified
  • Registered on the specialist register (CCT/CESR), Section 22 and AMP Status
  • Experienced & knowledgeable in Learning Disability Psychiatry
  • Knowledgeable of the Mental Health Act and Adults with Incapacity Act
  • A first‑rate communicator who can interview, assess & treat patients & write clear, comprehensive medical notes
  • Committed to continued professional development
  • Able to work as part of a multi‑disciplinary team
  • A member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or equivalent

Requirements

The successful candidate will be required to undergo an enhanced DBS and reference check and an offer of employment will be subject to successful clearance.
