Job description
Job Overview

The post holder will manage the Community Rehabilitation Unit at Treorchy Rhondda, providing clinical psychiatric rehabilitation expertise and leadership to a multidisciplinary inpatient rehabilitation team.

Reporting to Dr Arif Alam, Clinical Director, Mental Health, and professionally to Dr Dom Hurford, Medical Director, the role requires close collaboration with senior medical colleagues across district general hospitals and mental health settings, and liaison with senior clinicians within and beyond the UHB as required.

The successful candidate will work across multiple Health Board premises, including the Community Rehabilitation Unit, the Inpatient Unit at RGH, and other sites within the district.

Responsibilities
  • Provide specialist assessment and clinical management for adults (18+) with mental health problems in inpatient settings.
  • Offer medical liaison and advice to local consultants, GPs, and other agencies.
  • Deliver clinical psychiatric rehabilitation expertise and lead the multidisciplinary team.
  • Supervise the speciality doctor, core trainee, and, if approved, a Specialty Training Registrar.
  • Participate in audit, quality improvement, and education and training of medical, nursing and other staff.
  • Attend relevant committees, meetings and contribute to service management and development.
  • Serve as a S.12(2) approved doctor and as an Approved Clinician under the Mental Health Act.
  • Plan and participate in the consultant on‑call rota within the Mental Health Directorate.
  • Arrange cross‑cover with other rehabilitation and sector consultants.
Qualifications & Eligibility
  • Full GMC Registration.
  • MRC Psych. or equivalent.
  • On Specialist Register for Psychiatry or within six months of gaining CCT.
  • S.12(2) approval.
  • Approved Clinician approval.
Desirable
  • Additional relevant postgraduate qualification.
  • Relevant clinical qualification.
  • Welsh Approved Clinician approval.
Knowledge & Experience
  • Comprehensive training and experience in psychiatry.
  • Experience of acting as Responsible Clinician.
  • Understanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance.
  • Evidence of having undertaken audit relevant to the speciality.
  • Proven capability to initiate and undertake original work.
  • Experience of serving as a S.12 approved doctor and Approved Clinician.
  • Evidence of service development and formal management training.
  • Evidence of having delivered postgraduate teaching and multi‑disciplinary teaching.
  • Capacity to work under pressure and respond flexibly to varying demands.
