Job description
Overview

A vacancy at Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust. We invite a Consultant Older Adult Psychiatrist to lead and provide medical leadership for the Chelmsford Specialist Dementia and Frailty Service at the Crystal Centre, Chelmsford. The service delivers comprehensive care for patients aged 70+ with mental health problems or dementia, and may accept younger patients who meet frailty criteria.

Qualifications
  • Full GMC registration and membership of the Specialist Register.
  • Appropriate Consultant Grade (CCT) or within six months of obtaining a CCT on the date of application.
Responsibilities
  • Provide senior clinical leadership to the multidisciplinary team.
  • Lead clinical referral management from the post holder’s own patch.
  • Conduct new assessments for complex cases and supervise other team members.
  • Attend outpatient clinics (approximately 3 new patients and 10‑12 follow‑ups per session) and domiciliary visits (1 clinic).
  • Oversee clinical management of service patients through weekly multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Perform complex diagnostic memory assessments and supervise nurses on less complex assessments.
  • Conduct disclosure appointments to inform patients of diagnosis, discuss and initiate treatment if appropriate.
  • Support nurses in coordinating care for patients with complex problems and promote active case‑load management.
  • Participate in multi‑professional meetings and carry out Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act assessments as required.
  • Provide clinical advice to team members during working hours, supporting duty system decision‑making for complex cases.
  • Cover for holidays and absences to colleagues with mutual consultation and agreement.
