Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Psychiatry for The Cedars

We are delighted to invite you to apply for the ConsultantPsychiatrist post located on The Cedars, Wonford House, Exeter. The Cedarscomprises two acute inpatient wards which cares for adults of working age. Thecombined bed base of The Cedars is 32 beds, mixed gender unit.

There is a possibilityfor a hybrid remote working pattern dependant on the post. Extra ProgrammedActivities are available and negotiable for clinical, research, innovation,teaching, medical management and other special interests. For moregeographically remote posts, the Trust would be happy to negotiate additionalbespoke arrangements for suitable candidates.

The post holder will be based on one of the wards at TheCedars in Exeter, and be responsible for a maximum of 16 patients. There willbe a dedicated private office with PC/laptop accessibility. A medical secretarywill be provided and you will be well supported by a dedicated full-timemedical staffing department. There are resident doctor and MPAC provisions onthe ward.

This post is suitable as a first time NHS consultant, or an existing or post-retirement consultant with a broad level of general adult psychiatric expertise. International candidates are welcome to apply. Experience of working in adult acute inpatient mental health services is preferable but support will be given to doctors wishing to move from other psychiatric specialties or roles

Main duties of the job

The successful applicantwill offer assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients being managed informallyand those detained under the Mental Health Act in the capacity of ResponsibleClinician. They will also provide leadership to the wider urgent and inpatientcare pathway and participate in ensuring the care flow of patients through theTrust is efficient and patient centred.

You will take part in the on-call rota and otherconsultants from the area will be expected to provide cross-cover for leave.

Approved Clinician status at appointment is preferable but those who would be eligible eg doctors applying from abroad, will be supported to obtain this authority. We have excellent IT and full electronic record across our services and are in the process of a clinician-led design of our own clinical record system.

A mentor and peer group will be provided. You will have 2.5 Supporting Programmed Activities (10 hours a week) to support your professional development, attend your monthly peer group, quarterly medical advisory committee and local post-graduate meetings.

Person Specification
Research
  • Ability to interpret published research and to apply research findings to clinical practice.
  • Aptitude for and practical experience of research.
Experience
  • Prior experience working in a Community Mental Health Team.
  • Experience of psychiatric practice in a range of settings, especially the community.
  • Experience of audit and an understanding of the principles of clinical governance.
  • Evidence of development of special interest in Community based Psychiatry.
  • Proven commitment to improving the quality of clinical care.
Teaching and Supervision
