Job description
Job summary

Join us as a consultant psychiatrist in our newly transformed Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) and early intervention in the heart of the UK. You'll lead a medical team, within a multi-professional service, and be at the forefront of community care that changes lives for people with severe and complex mental health conditions, including psychosis.

Based in our North Warwickshire CMHT, you'll provide dedicated consultant input for patients referred to the team, with the facility for rapid assessment, flexible review of complex patients and timely discharge in liaison with GPs.

Our recent transformation has led to greater integrated working between primary and specialist mental healthcare. Working alongside a neighbourhood lead, you will be aligned to a PCN or group of GP surgeries and will take the medical lead for the assessment and treatment patients. You'll build relationships with GPs and offer advice and play a role in triage and referral allocation for your place.

There are endless opportunities for your career here. As a Trust we are leading national studies on trauma and psychosis, and our growing research partnerships with local universities means plenty of opportunities to get involved in research. You'll also inspire the next generation of psychiatrists through supervision of career grade and resident doctors, with opportunities to get involved in teaching.

Applications are welcome from both experienced and new consultants, and we can offer relocation packages.

Main duties of the job

The role of the consultant and their team is to provide assessment, diagnosis and supervision of treatment for community patients aged 17 to 65 who meet the criteria for the CMHT. This includes responsibility:

  • Diagnostic assessment particularly where there is diagnostic uncertainty or complexity
  • Assessment of risk of self-harm, harm to others or risk of neglect
  • Evaluating and giving advice on the interaction between physical/organic factors and other factors, including co‑ordinating any necessary examination, investigation and referral as required
  • Taking a lead role in multidisciplinary reviews in keeping with care pathway requirements
  • Assessing the need for, initiating and reviewing the prescription of medication used to treat mental health problems, and monitoring progress and providing guidance to GPs about continued prescribing after discharge
  • Acting as the Responsible Clinician for patients subject to Supervised Community Treatment detained under the Mental Health Act, providing reports for and attending Tribunals and Managers' Hearings and ensuring appropriate 117 After‑Care is in place for patients discharged from Section 3 or Section 37
  • Working in liaison with Acute and Inpatient consultants and teams over after‑care and discharge plans for acute‑care patients, especially for patients subject to Supervised Community Treatment
  • Ensuring that there is adequate liaison and communication with patients' Carers
  • Participating in Flexible Assertive Community Treatment model.
