Overview

This is an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join a dedicated team in Exeter, providing care to patients with enduring mental health problems. You will be responsible for delivering quality clinical services, managing complex cases, and contributing to the strategic development of the team and broader services.

Job responsibilities

As a Consultant Psychiatrist at Pinhoe View in Exeter, you will be part of a multidisciplinary team providing care to men and women with enduring mental health problems. You will act as the Responsible Clinician for up to 18 inpatients, leading clinical decision-making, formulating care plans, and guiding evidence-based treatment. You will participate in MDT meetings, care reviews, and strategic service development, collaborate with external agencies, and implement the Mental Health Act. You will contribute to clinical governance, audits, and service improvement, maintain accurate clinical records, and provide on-call cover.

You will be part of a 36-bed inpatient service, working alongside another full-time Consultant Psychiatrist and two Associate Specialists, within a multidisciplinary team including Nursing, OT, Psychology, and Social Work, supporting up to 16 patients with the help of an Associate Specialist doctor.

You will work to steer the development of the service in line with the hospital strategy and Elysium, maintain CPD and professional development opportunities, and work 37.5 hours a week with a competitive salary and benefits.

Key responsibilities
  • Act as Responsible Clinician for up to 18 inpatients
  • Lead clinical decision-making and manage complex cases
  • Formulate care plans and guide evidence-based treatment
  • Participate in MDT meetings, care reviews, and strategic service development
  • Collaborate with external agencies and implement the Mental Health Act
  • Contribute to clinical governance, audits, and service improvement
  • Maintain accurate clinical records and meet NHSE contractual obligations
  • Participate in second tier-on-call rota (telephone advice) and provide cover for colleagues during absences
Qualifications and experience
  • MRCPsych or MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • CCT/CESR equivalent in General Adult is desirable
  • CCT/CESR equivalent in other specialties may be considered depending on interest and experience
  • Candidates without CCT/CESR but with AC status and extensive experience in acute inpatient and senior medical/consultant-type roles may be considered
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • To hold Section 12(2) approval to work in England and Approved Clinician status
  • Experience in acute inpatient or community settings with risk assessment and risk management
