Job summary

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board is seeking a substantive Consultant in Geriatric Medicine to join the Wrexham Maelor Hospital team. The post supports service development in general geriatrics and rehabilitation with flexible working arrangements and annualised contracts.

The successful candidate will lead a multidisciplinary team, participate in on-call rotas and teaching, and contribute to department management meetings and strategic planning for elderly care services.

Qualifications

  • Full GMC Specialist Registration in Geriatrics or be due to obtain CCT within 6 months of interview date.
  • CESR applicants must have GMC Specialist Registration at the point of application.
  • Experience and interest in leadership and management development.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver a consultant-led Geriatric Medicine service for inpatients and outpatients.
  • Lead a multidisciplinary team and participate in departmental management meetings.
  • Take on-call duties and ward rounds with junior doctors and medical students.
  • Contribute to teaching, training, and supervision of junior staff and students.
  • Support development of Care of the Elderly services and service improvement initiatives.

Job description

We are delighted to be seeking a new colleague to join our expanding team of substantive consultants based at Wrexham Maelor Hospital. This newly created post adds to our existing team of nine consultants working across the East area of the Health Board, reflecting our ongoing commitment to service development and improvement. This opportunity arises from our plans to reconfigure and strengthen current services, with a particular focus on enhancing our well-established provision in general geriatrics and rehabilitation. We are committed to embracing innovation and modern ways of working. Within the team, we already support a variety of flexible working arrangements, including less than full-time and annualised consultant contracts. In addition, we have introduced three consultant therapist roles, further supporting our multidisciplinary approach to patient care. While we have recently expanded our workforce, we are also progressing a business case to secure additional funded consultant posts. This forms part of our strategic aim to future-proof our services and ensure we can meet the increasing demands associated with an ageing population.

  • Deliver a consultant-led Geriatric Medicine service at Wrexham Maelor Hospital for the diagnosis and management of both outpatients and inpatients.
  • Work within a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals and managers to further develop Care of the Elderly services. There are many areas of future growth for our department and a successful candidate will be welcome to play an integral part in shaping future services.
  • Participate in the general medical on-call rota and post-take ward rounds, providing leadership and support to the on-call medical team.
  • Take consultant responsibility for allocated inpatients, with support from a designated team of junior doctors.
  • Contribute to the teaching and training of junior doctors and medical students. Many consultants are Educational and Named Clinical Supervisors to junior doctors, and most consultants are offered honorary undergraduate clinical teacher status with Cardiff University., An understanding of the Strategic and Operational issues underpinning Clinical Governance and their application in daily practice and evidence of such.
  • A willingness to partake actively in the management of any specialist interest of the appointee within the job and participate in the departmental management meetings.

  • Evidence of participation. Research-based publications and previous audits

  • MB BS or equivalent.
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent., Experience in frailty, stroke, community geriatrics or other subspecialty
  • Evidence of participation in Management course or training., Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with colleagues
  • Ability to travel to meet the needs of the service
  • The ability to lead a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Aligns own values with those of the Health Board., Ability to speak Welsh or willingness to learn the Welsh language
