Job summary

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust seeks a Consultant in Paediatric Critical Care with a special interest in Cardiac Intensive Care. The role includes leadership of the PICU, duties across Level 2 and cardiac services, and involvement in ECMO cases.

It also offers strong teaching of trainees and opportunities for research within a regional specialist centre. The post is a 10 PA appointment based at the Leeds General Infirmary/St James's University Hospital, with a 1:9 on call.

Qualifications

• Strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable.

Consultant - Paediatric Critical Care (CON 993)

Required to fill this replacement post within the Paediatric Intensive Care Department at the Leeds General Infirmary/St Jamess University Hospital.The Paediatric Critical Care Unit at the Leeds General Infirmary is the regional lead centre. The unit admits approximately 650 Level 3 PICU patients and 250 Level 2 patients a year, of which approximately, 150 are retrieved from our referring district general hospitals by Embrace, the regional paediatric and neonatal retrieval service. The Paediatric Critical Care Service supports a wide range of services including cardiac, neurosurgery and liver transplant. Cardiac surgery/ Cardiology account for over 350 cases per year. The LGI is a major neurology / neurosurgical centre with trauma, spinal, oncology and craniofacial and spinal surgical interests and is also the trauma and paediatric surgical centre for the city. Paediatric Critical Care also supports the onsite tertiary specialities including haematology, oncology, bone marrow transplant and nephrology. We are also one of the 3 liver transplant centres in the country.

Main duties of the job

The service currently incorporates 26 beds in a refurbished unit in the Clarendon Wing which is adjacent to the cardiac and neurosurgery theatres and the new hybrid lab at the heart of the Leeds Childrens Hospital. There is a 6 bedded cardiac Level 2 facility located on the cardiology ward and there are two long term ventilation beds on the respiratory ward.This post is a 10 PA appointment for a Paediatric Critical Care Consultant, with a special interest in Cardiac Intensive Care. The post involves a 10 PA job plan on the Paediatric Critical Care Unit which includes first (PICU Lead), second (PICU Support) and third (Level 2) on shifts as well as a 1: 9 on call rota.

The successful applicant should possess Membership Examination of the Royal College of Physicians or Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health or Royal College of Anaesthetists (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.
