Job summary

Meeveem Limited seeks a Consultant Oral Surgeon to join a well-established maxillofacial team providing contemporary management of complex cases at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. Applicants should be on the GDC Specialist Register in Oral Surgery and have CCT (or within six months of it). UK hospital experience is essential.

The post covers three Worcestershire sites and offers opportunities in clinical leadership, governance, and postgraduate education within a supportive department.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

Job summary

Applications are invited for full time Consultant in Oral Surgery. This is a new post that will join a well-established maxillofacial surgical team to provide contemporary management of complex oral surgery patients. Applicants are required to be on the GDC Specialist Register in Oral Surgery and have their CCT in Oral Surgery (or be within six months of obtaining it by the interview date). Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential.

The Oral Maxillofacial Surgery team provide services across Worcestershire at our three hospital sites including Worcestershire Royal Hospital, Alexandra Hospital, Redditch and Kidderminster Treatment Centre.

Main duties of the job

We are looking to expand existing colleagues activity with a full time Consultant Oral Surgeon post in recognition of the complimentary benefits this will bring to the service.

Clinical work will include complex oral surgery, surgical support for orthodontic treatment and head and neck oncology patients. There is a long established working relationship with Worcestershire Community Dental Services and this will be further strengthened by this post.

Opportunities will also exist for interested candidates to in areas including clinical management and leadership, governance and postgraduate education and training. The recent opening on a Medical School in the city of Worcester provides exciting opportunities in undergraduate education.

Job responsibilities

This job description, together with the job plan, will be reviewed annually and agreed with the Clinical Director and Divisional Director, on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer, to ensure that it continually reflects the areas of work, clinical responsibility of the post and purchaser requirements.

• A suitably experienced post-holder will be expected to provide a clinical service in the relevant specialty to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and to General Practitioners.
• The post-holder will be expected to provide a service to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, General Practitioners and to attend multi-disciplinary meetings. The successful candidate will be expected to work within multi-disciplinary teams in providing high quality clinical care. It is anticipated work will be undertaken on three sites and closer to the patients home. The Trust is seeking to extend services to GP surgeries/health centres etc and job plans may be revised in due course.
• The post-holder will provide support to the A&E department and acute medicine to ensure timely appropriate care and patient flow through the hospital.
• The post-holder will provide consultation and advisory service to clinical colleagues in the Trust and Primary Care.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

• Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCT in Oral Surgery.
• Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty.
• Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
• Expertise in sub-specialty.
• Current BLS certification.

Desirable

• Post graduate sedation qualification.
• Post graduate teaching qualification.
• Additional post CCST development over 2 years as recommended by SAC in Oral Surgery.

Management and Administrative Experience

Essential

• Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively.
• Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service.
• Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities.
• Ability to manage and lead the specialty firm and multi-disciplinary team.
• Experience of audit management and conducting clinical audit.

Desirable

• Ability to manage and lead specialist unit and working parties as appropriate.
• Ability to use the evidence based and clinical audit to support decision making.

Teaching Experience

Essential

• Ability to teach clinical skills to medical, nursing staff and other disciplines.
• Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates.

• Ability to supervise postgraduate research.

Other requirements

Essential

• An understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues.
• Able to meet the travel requirements of the job and return to the hospital within 30 minutes when on call.

Research Experience

Essential

• Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
• An awareness of current specialty specific developments and initiative.

Desirable

• Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last 5 years.
• Evidence of having undertaken original research.

Qualifications

Essential

• Full GDC Registration with a Licence to practise.
• Undergraduate Dentistry (BDS or equivalent).
• Entry on the GDC Specialist Register in Oral Surgery (or expected within 6 months of interview date) via CCST (or mediated entry).
• Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship exit examination in Oral surgery, MOral Surg or equivalent.

Desirable

• Fellowship in Dental Surgery or Membership of Faculty of Dental Surgery of equivalent.
• Higher degree.
