The successful candidate will have MRCOG or equivalent, full GMC registration, and a medical education qualification, with the ability to lead clinical care and participate in education and governance activities.

Job overview

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust's Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology is looking to recruit for a 12 month fixed term contract. We are seeking to appoint enthusiastic and committed Consultant in to join the team and cover Trust wide.

This is an exciting opportunity to work within one of the UK's leading emergency care hospitals, delivering high-quality, patient-centred care to adults presenting with a wide range of acute medical conditions.

NSECH hosts the trusts acute O&G services. The Emergency Gynaecology Unit manages patients presenting with acute gynaecological conditions, as well as the early pregnancy service. Emergency Gynaecology procedures take place in the NSECH theatre suite, as well as high risk elective cases. The NSECH theatre suite hosts one of the trusts two Davinci surgical robots, used frequently by the Gynaecology team. Following surgery or admission, Gynaecology patients are managed on Ward 15 (Gynaecology & General Surgery).

For Obstetrics NSECH houses a 14 bedded birthing centre, with combined Consultant led and Midwifery led care, a 22 bedded postnatal/ antenatal ward, emergency, and elective obstetric theatres and a new, modern, Pregnancy Assessment Unit (PAU). The service currently delivers around 3,400 babies per year.

Main duties of the job

The post will be flexibly time-tabled to meet the demands of the service and the timing of sessions may change as the service develops.

The Job Plan will typically include an average of 8.5 Programmed Activities (PAs) for Direct Clinical Care duties (including admin and on-call) and 1.5 Programmed Activities for Supporting Professional Activities (SPA). A proposed job plan has been outlined in Appendix 1 and will be agreed on commencement of appointment.

Consultant medical staff in O&G participate in 7-day working as part of their normal working pattern. Your normal working pattern will be agreed with you locally as part of your job plan and this may consist of shifts of variable working hours including nights and weekends.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Participate in 24 hour on call rota, while maintaining and managing patient workload in antenatal and outpatient clinics.

To participate in training sessions for education and ensure we maintain compliance with CNTS guidelines.

Education & Qualifications
  • MRCOG (Member of Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists) or equivalent
  • Fully registered on the UK General Medical Council's Specialist Register or Specialist Registrars may apply if within 6 months of CCT at date of interview
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Medical Education Qualification
Experience & Knowledge
  • Clinical training and experience in the relevant specialty, equivalent to that required to gain entry to the UK Certificate of Completed Training (CCT) in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Experience and awareness of Clinical Governance
  • High standard of clinical skill and expertise in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • ATSM or equivalent experience in benign gynaecological surgery
  • ATSM or equivalent experience in colposcopy
  • Experience of audit management
  • Experience of supervising SpR’s
  • Formal training in Clinical Supervision/train the trainers
