We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well-integrated team as a less than full-time (8PA) Consultant in Paediatric Neurodisability. This is an enhanced clinical post, designed to support the continuing development of our clinical service. The successful candidate will join a vibrant Paediatric Neurology & Neurodisability department composed of 1 NHS Consultant in Paediatric Neurodisability, 1 Clinical Academic in Paediatric Neurodisability, 5 NHS Paediatric Neurologists, 3 Clinical Academic Paediatric Neurologists and a comprehensive team of allied health professionals.
In addition, you must hold MRCPCH or equivalent. A passion for paediatric Neurodisability and substantial experience in working with a multi-disciplinary team and skills to deliver necessary interventions are essential. In addition to the challenges of the role, we can offer you a commitment to teaching, education, research and audit. Candidates for the post must be registered medical practitioners and on, or eligible to join, the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Appointments Committee.

The Neurodisability service is currently an integrated department with Paediatric Neurology in the Great North Children’s Hospital. The department is one of the largest and most high-profile tertiary level paediatric neurology and Neurodisability units in the UK. Paediatric Neurodisability consultants have key roles in both the British Academy of Childhood Disability and the British Paediatric Neurology Association. The department has a strong academic influence, with 3 Clinical Senior Lecturers (including one in paediatric Neurodisability) and a NIHR Career Development Fellow. It provides acute and ongoing paediatric care for children and young people in Northeast and north Cumbria in our purpose-built Child Development Centre clinic space.
The post-holder will be based at GNCH and assume the duties of a Tertiary Paediatric Neurodisability Consultant. This includes assessments regarding the diagnosis and management of children previously seen by colleagues throughout the Northeast and Cumbria, and making recommendations or undertaking treatment/intervention. The post-holder will undertake occasional outreach work with clinicians and families. The post-holder will share responsibility with colleagues for the Neurodevelopmental, Vision and Motor clinics. The appointee will be expected to liaise with the wider multi-disciplinary team individually and on a collective basis at formal MDT meetings. The post holder will share responsibility for the care of tertiary neurodisability in-patients. The post-holder will also be expected to take a full and active role in departmental and directorate level initiatives on student and post-graduate (trainee) education, supervision, audit and quality improvement, as well as administrative tasks to support the department. Appropriate secretarial support will be provided. Personal office and computer facilities will be provided in the Paediatric Neurology and Neurodisability department.
