A healthcare recruiting firm is seeking a Consultant Microbiologist in South West Scotland. The role includes leading diagnostic services, ensuring quality and safety in microbiological practices, and collaborating across various specialties. Ideal candidates will have full GMC registration and broad-based experience in microbiology. This position offers opportunities for personal development and innovation in a well-equipped laboratory setting.
Triple West Medical has been appointed by an NHS Health Board in South West Scotland to help appoint a Consultant Microbiologist on a substantive basis. Are you ready for a fresh professional challenge, where your expertise in microbiology and infectious diseases can make a real, lasting difference? Our NHS Client is inviting applications for an inspired, forward-thinking Consultant Microbiologist to join the friendly, progressive team. Whether your passion lies in diagnostics, infection prevention, clinical liaison or teaching, they will offer you the space, resources, and support to shape your own future. In the heart of South West Scotland, they offer cutting-edge clinical practice in an environment that values people over bureaucracy, community over anonymity, and innovation over inertia. They have one of the most modern hospitals in the UK, designed with all single en-suite rooms — a feature that has dramatically improved infection control and patient recovery. The hospital is bright, spacious, and fully equipped with the latest diagnostic and laboratory technology. It’s a place built for people who want to deliver great care efficiently and safely.
You’ll join a dynamic, friendly team of Consultant Microbiologists who together provide a full diagnostic and infection prevention service across the region. This post replaces a retiring consultant and offers genuine scope for innovation and personal development. You’ll contribute to diagnostic microbiology and virology, infection control, clinical liaison, and antimicrobial stewardship, alongside opportunities to develop special interests or joint work with Infectious Diseases. If you have dual accreditation or experience in Infectious Diseases, you’ll have the option to participate in ward-based work and Outpatient Parenteral Antibiotic Therapy (OPAT) clinics. The balance between clinical and supporting professional activities (SPA) will be tailored to your skills, interests, and lifestyle.
The Microbiology Department is exceptionally well-equipped and UKAS-accredited, currently transitioning to the ISO 15189:2022 standard. They provide a comprehensive bacteriology, serology, molecular diagnostics, and mycology service supported by advanced automation, including MALDI-TOF, BioFire, Cepheid PCR, Vitek 2, and Abbott Architect platforms. The team of skilled Biomedical Scientists, senior technical leads, and IT support staff work closely with consultants to deliver accurate, timely, and clinically relevant results. They use the Apex LIMS system and are fully integrated with Health Protection Scotland through ECOSS for reporting and Observa for epidemiological analysis of antibiotic resistance.
