A prominent NHS Trust in Norwich is seeking a Consultant Microbiologist to deliver a range of microbiology and infectious disease services across multiple sites. The role requires full GMC registration and relevant experience in clinical microbiology. Qualifications

Job Summary

Consultant Microbiologist or Consultant in Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. We are looking for a Consultant in Microbiology and Infectious Disease to share the provision of day‑to‑day clinical microbiology and infectious disease services between Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kings Lynn NHS Foundation Trust (QEH)KL, Kings Lynn and Norfolk and Norwich University Teaching Hospital.

This is a replacement post with the existence of the Eastern Pathology Alliance (EPA) of which all three acute Trusts in Norfolk are members, there is an expectation for cross cover for the 3 hospitals that make up EPA. Although employed by the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NNUHFT), it is expected that the post holder will spend some of their time at QEH working alongside other consultant to provide a comprehensive microbiology service for QEHKL Trust including provision of cross‑cover for infection prevention and control.

There is a service level agreement already in place between the Trusts to allow this pattern of working, and job planning will be arranged jointly between the two organisations.

Responsibilities
  • Cover clinical sessions at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King's Lynn.
  • Contribute to the provision of a comprehensive microbiology service for all users of the laboratory.
  • Rotate with colleagues to provide either an Infection Prevention and Control doctor role or an Antibiotic Stewardship role, by mutual agreement.
  • Give a consultation and advisory service to medical colleagues in other specialties in the QEHKL and to GPs and other healthcare professionals in Primary Care.
  • Provide out‑of‑hours (on‑call) advisory services to James Paget University Hospital and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, in addition to primary care.
  • Liaise with medical staff in other specialties and participate in regular clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities at the NNUH and QEHKL.
  • Take part in the Royal College of Pathologists continuing medical education programme.
Qualifications and Essential Skills
  • Full GMC Registration with licence to practice.
  • FRCPath or equivalent with specialist registration.
  • Entry on the GMC specialist register.
  • Participation in recognised CPD and appraisal.
  • Capable of working in a multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Enthusiasm for service development and teaching.
  • Demonstrates understanding and commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
  • Able to work under pressure.
  • Training and experience equivalent to that required for FRCPath.
  • Teaching at undergraduate/postgraduate level.
  • Wide experience of clinical microbiology, infectious disease and infection control.
  • Competent IT skills.
Desirable Qualifications and Skills
  • Further qualification such as MRCP or evidence of equivalent qualification.
  • Teaching the teachers or equivalent.
  • Previous responsibility for service improvement.
  • Management skills.
  • Experience in research or published papers in an area of special interest.
  • Good presentation skills.
  • Commitment to develop an appropriate specialist interest.
  • Flexible outlook on working hours.
  • Must live within a 15‑mile radius of the base Trust or 30 minutes travelling time.
  • Ability to travel across multi‑sites whilst public transport may not be available.
