Consultant Intensive Care Medicine

The closing date is 07 December 2025

We are looking for an enthusiastic and self‑motivated consultant to join our department as a Substantive Consultant in Intensive Care, starting March 2026.

The successful candidate would join the Intensive Care Unit on‑call rota (presently 1:8 but may transition to 1:12 with 1:6 weekend double‑up) and in non‑ICU weeks either cover 2nd on daytime ICU sessions or support critical care outreach or deliver DCC in a complimentary specialty. It is expected that the successful candidate will also join Mortality Review meetings and MDT meetings (to discuss long‑term patients) on Wednesday afternoons in their non‑ICU cover weeks. A central expectation of the successful candidate would be to undertake a leading role in the development and support of services within the umbrella of Critical Care. This may include co‑developing an in‑house advanced critical care practitioner programme; working on Cerner (EPR); continuing to develop a post‑ICU rehabilitation service; supporting the Outreach Team.

Main duties of the job

There is a local mentorship programme for newly appointed consultants within the Department.

The successful appointee would be expected to actively support and join activities on the ICU including quarterly M&M, Board meetings, weekly Mortality reviews (concurrent with MDT), and twice‑yearly cross‑site clinical governance meeting when Audit and Quality Improvement Projects are presented.

About us

Our Trust is one of England's top‑performing and safest trusts. We operate two main acute hospital sites—Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex University Hospital—along with award‑winning clinics across North West London.

Our nearly 7,500 staff care for a diverse population of 1.5m, providing full clinical services including maternity, A&E and children’s services, plus specialist HIV and sexual health care. The CQC rates us Good in safety, effectiveness, care and responsiveness, and Outstanding in leadership and resource use.

We continually invest in our facilities, including a £30m expansion of critical care at Chelsea and an £80m Ambulatory Diagnostic Centre at West Mid.

We are delivering sustainable healthcare through our Green Plan. In line with Greener NHS ambitions, we aim for net zero carbon emissions by 2045. Achieving this requires collective effort. We encourage staff to reduce their impact on carbon, waste and pollution wherever possible. Every action counts to create a healthier, more sustainable future.

We are committed to equal opportunities and believe diversity drives innovation and excellence. We welcome applications from the global majority, veterans and under‑represented communities, valuing the perspectives they bring.

If you haven't heard from us within 3 weeks of the closing date, your application was likely unsuccessful. Employment is subject to a six‑month probation. Some roles may require weekend shifts at multiple sites.

Job responsibilities

There will be a level of expectation of cross‑site working at West Middlesex Hospital ICU in emergency situations or as part of a regular Job Plan.

Chelsea ICU participates in ICNARC and works closely within the North-West London Critical Care Network.
