Consultant Infection Specialist with a focus on tropical medicine and parasitology

About the role

A unique opportunity has arisen for a 4 PA Consultant in Infection with a specialist focus on Tropical Medicine and Parasitology at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases (HTD), part of University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH). This post will enhance consultant service delivery within the NHS England Highly Specialist Tropical Medicine and Parasitology Service, with a particular emphasis on the Clinical Parasitology Service and participation in associated national multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join a dynamic and expert multi‑disciplinary team comprising Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine Consultants, Clinical Parasitologists, Tropical Dermatologists, Specialist Pharmacists, Nurse Specialists, and Laboratory Scientists.

This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a national specialist service known for delivering high‑quality care, education, and innovation in the management of parasitic and tropical infections. Job responsibilities

The Consultant will support outpatient and inpatient infectious disease services at University College London Hospitals (UCLH), with a focus on tropical medicine and parasitology. The role averages four Programmed Activities (PAs) per week – three for clinical care and one for supporting professional activities – delivered on a rotational basis.

Direct Clinical Care (3 PAs)
  • Deliver outpatient parasitology and tropical medicine clinics, providing expert assessment and management of parasitic infections.
  • Provide national‑level clinical advice on the diagnosis and management of parasitic infections.
  • Participate in and chair national Parasitology Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings.
  • Supervise Parasitology Resident doctor(s) and Clinical Nurse Specialists, supporting patient management and nurse‑led clinics.
  • Provide consultant‑led inpatient care on Ward T08, managing complex infection cases, including tropical infections, community‑acquired and hospital‑acquired infections, infections in immunocompromised patients (including HIV).
  • Participate in the inpatient on‑call rota (approximately 1 in 24, averaged annually).
Supporting Professional Activities (1 PA)
  • Contribute to national and local guidelines in parasitology and tropical medicine.
  • Deliver teaching and training for resident doctors, specialty trainees, and national specialist groups.
  • Undertake educational supervision, audit, quality improvement, and clinical governance activities.
  • Participate in Consultants monthly meetings and maintain Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Person Specification
Knowledge and Qualifications (Essential)
  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in an Infection specialty, or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Applicants that are non‑UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
  • MRCP or equivalent.
  • Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.
Desirable
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Tropical Medicine.
Experience (Essential)
  • Specialist experience in clinical parasitology.
  • Experience of leading regional or national specialist MDTs including engagement with national reference laboratories.
  • Excellent knowledge of routine laboratory‑based diagnostic parasitological techniques.
  • Experience in reporting and interpreting parasitology results and advising clinicians.
Desirable
  • Experience in clinical parasitology and tropical medicine outside of the UK.
  • Training or experience in General Medicine or other related specialities.
Skills and Abilities (Essential)
  • Ability to offer an expert opinion on the differential diagnosis, appropriate tests and management of a range of tropical and parasitological conditions.
