Job summary

Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is recruiting a substantive Consultant in Paediatric Haematology with a specialty in Malignant Haematology and Stem Cell Transplantation, based at Leeds General Infirmary. The post delivers 10 PAs to support the Paediatric Malignant Haematology and Stem Cell Transplant teams.

Applicants should hold MBChB (or equivalent) and be on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at interview.

Qualifications

• MBChB or equivalent and inclusion on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at interview time.
• High level of competence in Paediatric Haematology including stem cell transplant and malignant haematology.
• Excellent communication and team-work, patient-centred approach and teaching commitment.

Responsibilities

• Deliver an emergency and elective regional paediatric service for haematology patients with focus on malignancy and transplantation.
• Share on-call responsibility across the Paediatric Haematology and Oncology Team.
• Provide advice and support to paediatric specialists and referral centres.
• Participate in clinical governance, education, supervision and research activities.
• Oversee day-to-day care of inpatients including leukemia management and transplant patients.

This post is required to fill a replacement post within the Haematology and Oncology Department at Leeds Teaching HospitalsThis is an exciting opportunity to join the paediatric haematology and oncology team at Leeds Childrens Hospital, based at Leeds General Infirmary. This is for substantive appointment as a Consultant in Paediatric Haematology, with special interests in Malignant Haematology & Stem Cell Transplantation.This post will deliver 10PAs supporting the Paediatric Malignant Haematology and Stem Cell Transplant teams.Applicants should have established skills in Paediatric Haematology and specifically in stem cell transplant and malignant haematology. Excellent communication and team working skills and a strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching are required and a research interest is desirable.If Shortlisted for Interview you will be required to give a 10 minute presentation on"Challenges in paediatric stem cell transplantation over the next 5 years".INTERVIEWS WILL BE HELD: 19th November 2026

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an enthusiastic consultant to join the current Paediatric Haematology Consultants with a focus on Malignant Haematology and Stem Cell Transplantation. The successful applicant should possess MBChB (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.Applicants should have a high level of competence in Paediatric Haematology and its related specialties including stem cell transplant and malignant haematology. Excellent communication and team working skills, a patient centred approach and a strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching are required. A research interest is desirable.Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

Job Summary

The duties and responsibilities of the role include:

• delivering an emergency and elective regional service for children and young people with haematological disorders In conjunction with consultant & multi-disciplinary colleagues in the Paediatric Haematology and Oncology Team, with particular responsibility for leukaemia and haematopoietic stem cell transplant.
• sharing on-call responsibility with the other consultants in the Paediatric Haematology and Oncology Team. This comprises an attending on call for the whole service. Depending on the training of the appointee they may also participate in the non-malignant haematology telephone advice on call rota, in which case their attending on call commitment will be reduced.
• providing advice and support to the other Paediatric Specialists in Leeds Children's Hospital and to those caring for Children and Young People in other hospitals who refer to Leeds.
• participating in the multi-professional paediatric clinical governance programmes, and clinical management meetings.
• participating in education, supervision and training of resident medical staff.
• To participating in the active departmental research programme and/or develop appropriate research interests that will benefit the service.
• being responsible for the day to day care of the Paediatric and Young Adult Haematology inpatients with Haematological disorders, including Leukaemia and those undergoing stem cell transplant.
