Job summary

A community healthcare organization in Nuneaton seeks a Consultant for their Paediatric Dentistry services. The role involves leading clinical teams, developing paediatric clinical capacity, and delivering specialist care across various locations. Ideal candidates will possess a Membership in Paediatric Dentistry, relevant experience, and the ability to manage and supervise junior staff. George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust (GEH) is an integrated acute, community and primary care service provider comprising George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton, and Community Dental Services for Coventry and Warwickshire and the Urgent Care Centre based at GEH. Community Dental Services sit within the Directorate of planned care and are based within 4 hospitals and 6 health centres. Dental services are also delivered on a domiciliary basis when necessary.

Purpose
  • This is a new post and is subject to the Terms and Conditions of service governing the appointment of Hospital Medical and Dental Staff in England and Wales, or as subsequently varied by agreement.
Main duties of the job
  • The Consultant/Specialist will be a highly regarded member of the community dental services senior management team. Active involvement with the West Midlands Paediatric Managed Clinical Network will be essential.
  • The George Eliot Community Dental Services deliver specialist dental care across a varied geographic and socioeconomic area. The service operates within 4 hospitals and 6 health centres. Collaborative working and shared care arrangements are promoted to optimise patient experience and clinical effectiveness across service boundaries when necessary. Highly committed, enthusiastic and suitably experienced clinicians and nursing teams offer comprehensive paediatric care. Consultant level leadership and supervision will be integral to future success and service development.
Special Requirements
  • The Consultant should ideally have some experience of working in community-based settings and the provision of comprehensive care under conscious sedation and general anaesthesia.

Job responsibilities
  • Development of paediatric specialist clinical capacity and services
  • Deliver effective support, guidance, training and workforce development opportunities for clinical teams operating within the specialty within the Coventry and Warwickshire IC
  • Enable dental services to develop in line with recommendations of Commissioning Guidance for Paediatric Dentistry and GIRFT Community Dental Services
  • Guide the dental management of medically compromised children and adolescents in the community and ensure essential local, regional and national links in support
  • In conjunction with other Specialists within and out with the service, deliver, develop and enhance the provision of treatment under conscious sedation, general anaesthesia, dental trauma, and in residential and special school settings and others yet to be identified.

Person Specification
Experience and Knowledge
  • Experience in the multidisciplinary management of Paediatric patients
  • Experience in the day to day clinical management of a Paediatric Dentistry service
  • Ability to appraise scientific literature critically
  • Experience in Community Dental Services settings
  • Research qualification (e.g. MRes, PhD)
  • Participation in clinical research
Qualification(s) and Professional Training
  • Membership in Paediatric Dentistry Equivalent Possession of a CCST in Paediatric Dentistry or equivalent for other European Economic Area (EEA)
  • Possession of the Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Examination in Paediatric Dentistry or equivalent for other European Economic Area (EEA)
  • All nationals, upon taking up post an NHS primary dental care performer number
  • On the Paediatric Dentistry Specialist list with the United Kingdom General Dental Council
  • Other Postgraduate qualification in Paediatric or equivalent specialty or teaching (e.g. MSc , Diploma, Doctorate)

  • Capacity to use logical/lateral thinking to solve problems/make decisions
  • Capacity to work effectively with others.
  • Effectively supervise junior staff and other staff groups
  • Deliver the highest quality evidence based patient care and service development
