A leading teaching hospital trust in the UK is seeking a Consultant in Paediatric Critical Care to provide high-quality care in their Paediatric Intensive Care Unit and Embrace Transport Service. The role involves managing critically ill patients and is suitable for candidates with extensive clinical experience. The position allows flexibility in working full or part-time and contributes to teaching, research, and service development.
Requiredto fill this new post within the Paediatric Critical Care /Embrace Transport Service at the Leeds ChildrensHospital.
TheLeeds Childrens Hospital has an annual budget of £61 million, inpatient bedbase of 286 beds, and delivers 56,000 outpatient appointments and 19,000inpatient and day case episodes. The majority of which is on the Leeds GeneralInfirmary site, however there is a Neonatal unit based on the St JamesHospital site. The Leeds Childrens Hospital employs a total of 90 consultantsproviding general, specialist and supra-regional childrens medical andsurgical services. Inpatient, day case and outpatient services are mainlyprovided at the LGI.
AdditionalChildrens Services provided in Non-Paediatric Specialities
Servicesfor children are also provided within a number of other specialities. Theseinclude dermatology, orthopaedic and spinal surgery, ophthalmology, dentalsurgery, maxillo-facial surgery, accident and emergency, ENT, neurosurgery,plastic and reconstructive surgery, renal transplant surgery and clinicalgenetics.

Thesuccessful applicant should possess MBBS/FRCS(or equivalent) and should beincluded on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time ofinterview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointmentregulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the SpecialistRegister.
Applicants should haveestablished skills in and its related specialties including a high level ofclinical experience and competencein Paediatric Intensive Care.
Astrong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a researchinterest is desirable.

We are looking for 2 substantive Consultants to work in 50:50split posts between the Paediatric Intensive Care Department at Leeds GeneralInfirmary and Embrace Transport Service which is part of Sheffield Childrens Hospital. These posts will support the service as part of the workforcedevelopment plan for the future.
These posts are 10 PA appointments split 50:50between PCCU and Embrace for a Paediatric Intensive Care Consultant, with aspecial interest in Transport as well as General and Cardiac Intensive Care.The posts involve 5 PAs on Paediatric Critical Care with an additional 5PAs offered by Embrace Yorkshire and Humber Infant and Childrens TransportService based in Barnsley, hosted by Sheffield Childrens Hospital FoundationTrust
2.OBJECTIVES OF THE POST
2.1.The post will include 5 programmed activities (PA) at PCCU and 5 PA atEmbrace. SPAtime will be equally split between the two services.
2.2.To delivercare to patients with critical illness including:
GeneralMedical patients
Medical and SurgicalCardiac patients
Manage patients on Extracorporeal Life Support
Specialist surgery including Neurosurgery; Liver transplant and Renaltransplant
Contributionto joint Cardiology and Cardiothoracic meetings
Support the Embrace Transport service as a 5 PAcommitment.
2.2.To work withConsultant colleagues in PCCU and Embrace to deliver acute on call (this iscurrently 1 in 9 for PCCU). This includes acute ward rounds and unit managementduring normal working hours and regular out of hours commitment on the on-callrota. The workload will be split between PCCU and Embrace such that you willwork full time at either service for a period of approximately 3-6 months.There is flexibility within this in order to support both services and ensure abalanced post.
2.3. To link withConsultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within
the Childrens Hospital andacross the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust and
with colleagues in districtgeneral hospitals; Sheffield Childrens Hospital and
other regional transportservices.
The post will be for 5programmed activities (PA) at Embrace as detailed above.
The service is currentlycovered by the equivalent of 9 whole time consultants on a 1 in 9 rota. Out ofhours on call commitment will be provided pro rata in line with PA commitments.During the induction period there will be a period of time working on thespecialist trainee rota to gain familiarity if not recnetly worked at Embrace
On call is non-resident after22:00 and can be covered from home provided that post-holders live within 30minutes travelling time or 10 miles of the Barnsley base. Overnight on siteaccommodation is available for consultants who live further than 10 miles awayfrom base.
Specific duties:
o Take clinical andmanagerial responsibility for the transport service while on duty
o Be familiar with equipment,operational policies and staffing levels/competencies
o Facilitate conference callsfor patients requiring immediate high priority transfer
o Provide initial advice;facilitate conference call between referring clinician, identified acceptingunit consultant and any other specialist required
o Triage calls to determinethe composition of the transport team
o Provide advice to thetransport team on the management of the transfer
o Perform transfers includingwhen patient acuity dictates a consultant level of care
o Support training anddevelopment, including supervised transports, for new members of the team
o Reporting of incidents aspart of a just culture
o Involvement in audit andresearch
o Adherence to policiesagreed by the service
o Be involved in themanagement of the service
o Provide mentoring supportto medical and nursing sta
2.5.To contributeto infection control, research, teaching and new developments within thePaediatric Critical Care Unit and Embrace. The post holder will be encouragedto facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs on goingin both services.
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
