Qualifications

  • Must be registered with GMC in Ophthalmic Anaesthesia.
  • FRCA qualification is essential.
  • CCT or CESR required.
  • Minimum of 6 months experience in NHS as Consultant in Ophthalmic Anaesthesia.

You will handle a diverse workload across various surgical specialties, with opportunities for subspecialising.

What will your responsibilities be?

As an ophthalmic anaesthesia consultant, you play a vital role in ensuring safe, effective anaesthetic care for patients undergoing eye surgery—from neonates to the elderly. You lead preoperative assessments, tailor anaesthetic plans using local anaesthesia, sedation, or general anaesthesia, and manage risks and complications during procedures. Your expertise supports surgeries ranging from cataracts to complex orbital operations, often performed as day cases. You collaborate closely with ophthalmic surgeons and theatre teams, ensuring smooth, efficient service delivery. Beyond the operating room, you help shape departmental standards, mentor junior staff, and contribute to clinical governance, making you essential to both patient outcomes and service excellence.
