Job description

This 5PA Consultant Psychiatrist post is based within the Winchester Memory Assessment Service (MAS), part of the Older Persons' Mental Health pathway in Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The role focuses on delivering specialist diagnostic assessments, clinical reviews, and formulation for patients with suspected cognitive disorders, working closely with an experienced multidisciplinary team. The post holder will provide clinical leadership within MAS and contribute to MDT meetings, offer expert advice to clinicians, and review neuroimaging and cognitive assessments. Cross cover for Consultant colleagues in the Winchester and Andover OPMH Community Mental Health Teams is required during periods of absence.

The job includes 3.5 Direct Clinical Care PAs and 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities, covering CPD, appraisal, governance, and teaching. Opportunities exist for involvement in research, quality improvement, and medical education. The Trust provides strong professional support, including mentoring, induction, wellbeing services, and administrative resources. Section 12 and AC approval are essential or must be obtainable. This role offers a balanced, flexible Consultant position within a supportive and academically active service.

Communicate promptly with GPs and referrers. Maintain accurate clinical records. Participate in appraisal and job planning. Uphold GMC professional standards. Contribute to Trust-wide governance and mandatory training. Support junior staff and MDT colleagues.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full Registration with the General Medical Council
  • MRCPsych or recognised equivalent
  • Eligible for inclusion in the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview. CCT in Old Age Psychiatry and/or CCT in General Adult Psychiatry.
  • Approved under section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983

Experience

Essential

  • Prior experience of general adult psychiatry working with detained/Mental Health Community as senior Resident or consultant
  • Experience of audit and an understanding of the principles of clinical governance
