Job Summary

Applications are invited for a full‑time consultant post in obstetrics and maternal medicine. The appointee will join a cohesive, friendly team of 38 consultants in obstetrics and gynaecology working across Bristol and Weston.

The appointee will be an experienced obstetrician and will work with 21 other obstetricians and specialists within the department to provide a full elective and emergency obstetric service to secondary and tertiary level patients attending the hospital.

Development of specialist areas of interest is encouraged and will be supported in the job plans. The appointee will work collaboratively within the department and within the maternal medicine multidisciplinary team to provide secondary and tertiary level care for the wide range of medical problems referred to St. Michael’s Hospital as part of the University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust.

The appointee will contribute fully to the obstetric workload of the department including delivery suite sessions and on‑call, and will take an active part in undergraduate and postgraduate education. Experience in clinical leadership and a keen interest to acquire leadership roles in the department is hugely welcomed.

The timetable may be subject to change by mutual agreement with the Lead Doctor following job plan review. The post is based at St Michael’s Hospital, with a day each week at Weston General Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be expected to provide expert intrapartum care on the delivery suite, advanced emergency antenatal care in obstetric triage and run obstetric surgical lists.

The appointee will work alongside the consultant team to provide a full elective and emergency obstetric service to secondary and tertiary level patients attending the hospital. The appointee will contribute fully to the obstetric workload of the department across St Michael’s and Weston General Hospitals, including delivery suite sessions and an on‑call commitment.

Qualifications & Training – Essential
  • Full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • Certification of completion of specialist training (CCT) (or equivalent, OR Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) at the point of interview)
  • Candidates can be within 6 months of gaining CCT at the date of interview. Please note this does not apply to CESR applications
  • ATSM or subsepecialty training or equivalent in Maternal Medicine
  • Higher degree (MD/PhD/MSc) or teaching qualification (postgraduate certificate or higher) completed or in progress.

  • ATSM in advanced labour ward practice

  • Risk management and/or clinical governance experience
