Job summary

A leading NHS Foundation Trust in the UK is seeking a Medical Microbiology Consultant to provide leadership in Microbiology and Infection Control Services. The successful candidate will require FRCPath(UK) or equivalent qualifications, full GMC registration, and inclusion on the Specialist Register in Medical Microbiology or Infectious Diseases. Qualifications

  • Must be within six months of CCT or equivalent at interview date.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership in managing Microbiology and Infection Control Services.
  • Conduct lab work, advise on diagnostic samples, and validate results.
  • Participate in the diagnosis and management of patients.
  • Involved in business planning and introduction of new methods.
  • Review departmental policies and protocols according to Trust policy.
  • Maintain communication with clinical colleagues and service users.
  • Advise on Infection control issues with nursing colleagues.

Job description
Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership in the management, provision and development of Microbiology and Infection Control Services for the department.
  • Undertake laboratory work including advice regarding diagnostic samples, validation and interpretation of results and involvement in agreeing policies and procedures for the examination of samples.
  • Participate in the diagnosis and management of individual patients by liaison with patients, clinicians and other hospital and community staff.
  • Be involved in business planning, introduction of new methods and forward planning for staff and equipment.
  • Regularly and systematically review all departmental policies, SOPs and protocols in line with Trust policy on document control and risk management strategy.
  • Maintain effective communication and engagement with clinical colleagues and other service users, including consultants in communicable disease control and health protection.
  • Advise on Infection control issues in conjunction with microbiology and infection control nursing colleagues.
Qualifications

For medical consultants qualifications required are FRCPath(UK) or equivalent, full GMC registration, and inclusion on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council in Medical Microbiology or Microbiology/Infectious Diseases and within six months of CCT or its equivalent at interview date.
