This is a substantive post based at Lister Hospital located in Stevenage. The post consists of 10 programmed activities (PAs), but part‑time and job‑share applicants are welcome to apply.
This is a career‑enhancing opportunity to work in a large district general hospital covering the full range of acute services.
The team consists of 4 Consultants who provide a comprehensive Microbiology service. The department provides a comprehensive range of services for our resident population of approximately 500,000 residing mainly in East and North Hertfordshire and extending to the borders of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, West Hertfordshire, and Essex.
Stevenage has great transport links and is only 20 minutes from London by train and lies east of junctions 7 and 8 of the A1(M). The town thrives with shops, cafes, supermarkets, and restaurants.
The Trust offers an exciting 12‑month Consultant induction programme, which involves a monthly education session for new consultants on topics such as ‘Being a New Consultant – Things I Wish I’d Known’ and ‘Finance and Contracts’.
The Consultant Microbiologists provide a proactive, dynamic and consultative link between clinicians, patients and the laboratory service.
The role includes the provision of advice on appropriate and timely investigations for microbial diseases, and professional direction of the laboratory service. Working together with senior biomedical staff ensures regular review of the investigative repertoire and methodology employed, medical reporting and interpretation of results, and advice on patient management.
The Consultant Microbiologists are members of the Trust Infection Control Team.
The post holder will be expected to contribute in all aspects outlined above and towards teaching of medical and other healthcare professionals where appropriate. Appropriate internal arrangements are made for the provision of all aspects of a 24‑hour medical microbiology service, including cover for annual and study leave.
