Job Description

Main duties of the job

University Hospital Southampton (UHS) NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant in Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology to a permanent 9‑person post, incorporating both inpatient infectious disease and microbiology work.

Responsibilities
  • Inpatient and outpatient Infectious Diseases activity
  • Clinical Microbiology including participation in consultant‑duty microbiologist weekly rota and Antimicrobial Stewardship activity
  • Participation in ID clinical and radiology MDTs
  • Participation in the microbiology out‑of‑hours on‑call rota (1 in 8)
What We’re Looking For

Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • FRCPath or equivalent

Essential experience

  • Experience managing inpatients with suspected and confirmed infectious diseases
  • Experience providing microbiology advice to trust‑based clinical teams and healthcare staff in the community
  • Experience interpreting microbiology results, authorisation and close working with laboratory staff
  • Participation in audit and clinical governance activity

Desirable

  • Dual CCT accreditation within 6 months (Infectious Diseases & Medical Microbiology)
  • MD or PhD
  • Prizes/distinctions
  • Significant publications in peer‑reviewed journals
  • Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H)
  • Laboratory management experience
