Our focus is on driving improvement within acute stroke services for Mersey and West Lancashire, alongside extending support to the wider region. This includes advanced stroke care such as thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy (which is performed 24/7). Our comprehensive stroke centre at Whiston Hospital has a fast connection to our thrombectomy‑capable stroke centre (Walton Centre), where we deliver one of the highest numbers of thrombectomies in the region. Whiston, as the regional hyperacute stroke unit for Mid‑Mersey, has routinely been amongst the highest performing stroke units in the Stroke Sentinel National Audit since 2015 and was the highest performing stroke unit nationally in the latest quarter.
The successful candidate will support the delivery of acute services, participate in Monday to Friday transient ischaemic attack (TIA) clinics, and look after stroke patients on the HASU (Hyper Acute Stroke Unit) and ASU (Acute Stroke Unit). In addition, stroke rehabilitation unit cover will be required for the post‑acute phase of stroke patients.
