Qualifications

  • Full GMC registration is essential.
  • MRCOG or equivalent specialist registration required.
  • CCT or equivalent qualification (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by AAC date).
  • Must expect to receive CCT within 6 months to be interview eligible; otherwise already on GMC Specialist Register.
  • Entry onto GMC Specialist Register or eligibility within 6 months of AAC date is required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Labour Ward management during designated hot weeks with dedicated obstetric care.
  • Deliver direct, consultant-led care across the obstetric unit.
  • Develop and enhance simulation training programmes (e.g., PROMPT-style) for multidisciplinary teams.
  • Provide emergency gynaecology cover during hot weeks and participate in general obstetrics/gynaecology clinics and theatres as required.

Main duties of the job

Main duties of the job As the Labour Ward Lead, the appointed consultant will oversee the daily operations of the obstetric unit during allocated hot weeks. During this period, the consultant will deliver direct, consultant-led care across the unit, with other clinical duties temporarily suspended to ensure a dedicated focus on obstetric care. Emergency gynaecology cover during these weeks will be provided by a separate consultant. The role also encompasses responsibility for the development and enhancement of the simulation training program. This includes designing and delivering multidisciplinary simulation sessions aimed at improving clinical outcomes and fostering cohesive team performance in high-risk obstetric scenarios.

We’re seeking dynamic professionals to join our Obstetrics and Gynecology team at Princess Alexandra Hospital. This is a unique opportunity to be part of our mission to provide exceptional medical services.

The Department of Obstetrics and gynaecology is part of the Family diagnostic and Community FDC division. It consists of an integral maternity and gynaecology unit on a single site based at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. Inpatients are based at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, while clinics are held at Princess Alexandra Hospital, St Margaret's Hospital (Epping) and Herts & Essex Hospital, (Bishop's Stortford), as well as other outreach centers.

The successful applicant will participate in a 1:14 on-call rota, lead Labour Ward management during designated hot weeks, and provide emergency gynaecology cover.

This position entails active involvement in managing complex obstetric cases, leading multidisciplinary teams, and maintaining the highest standards of care within the delivery suite. Additionally, the post holder will contribute to general obstetrics and gynaecology clinics, elective and emergency theatres, and simulation-based teaching programs.

This post offers 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), with the flexibility to develop additional roles and responsibilities through mutual agree.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCOG or appropriate specialist registration
  • Relevant CCT or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)*
  • Must be expecting to receive CCT within the next six months to be eligible for interview. All other candidates must already be on the GMC Specialist Register.
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC*
Desirable
  • Further higher degree (depends on post)
Experience
Essential
  • CCST or Clinical training and experience in general obstetrics and gynaecology equivalent to that required for a UK CCST
  • RCOG ATSM or similar in Labour ward
  • Experience in Simulation Training lead or PROMPT training
  • RCOG ATSM in General Gynaecology (As the Post covers Both general Obstetrics and Gynaecology)
Desirable
  • Additional clinical experience/training that may be required
  • Additional RCOG ATSM(s) in Obstetrics or Gynaecology (Acute Gynaecology/Early Pregnancy or Hysteroscopy or Colposcopy or High-risk Pregnancy) are desirable.
