Job Summary

Interviews for this post will be announced shortly, so please keep an eye on this page. You will be required to attend the interview in person on the scheduled day. There will be a pre‑interview engagement day the day before, where you will have the opportunity to meet with various stakeholders.

This post is an exciting opportunity to join the newly formed Elderly Care and Frailty Department. The role will mainly focus on the development of frailty services for the island of Jersey as well as having ward commitments for both general internal medicine. The role will lead on the development of the frailty unit interfacing secondary care with primary care. The role will have a rotational commitment for rehabilitation which is situated on‑site at Jersey General Hospital as well as outpatient clinical sessions. For newly appointed consultants a mentor will be allocated to support their induction to the post. Dedicated office space and secretarial time will be provided as part of the Hospital investment in this appointment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to development of the Care of the Elderly service in Jersey, building and developing a frailty service which ensures integration between primary and secondary care.
  • Provide, with the other consultants, a system of mutual out‑of‑hours cover for General Internal Medicine and cover for annual, study and professional leave.
  • Provide a consultation and advisory service to medical colleagues in other specialties in Health and Care Jersey.
  • Liaise with medical staff in other specialties and participate in the regular clinical meetings and postgraduate activities of the hospital.
  • Take part in the continuing medical education programme. Health and Care Jersey will provide study leave expenses in line with national terms and conditions of service.
  • Undertake outpatient clinics for both frailty & elderly care.
  • Set up, lead, participate and attend relevant service MDTs.
  • Liaise with tertiary referral centres as appropriate to provide patient‑centred care & service improvements.
  • Deliver Consultant‑led care on inpatient wards focusing on Elderly Care, with the opportunity to develop a speciality outpatient service.
  • Support the development and running of the Elderly Care and Frailty services within the department.
On‑Call Rota

The appointee will take part in the General Medicine on‑call rota of one in eight. During the on‑call period the consultant will cover all medical inpatients in the event of deterioration or medical emergencies and will work in parallel with an on‑call acute medicine consultant to manage acute medical admissions. Weekday on‑calls operate 8 AM to 8 AM the following day. Weekend on‑calls operate from 8 AM on Friday to 8 AM Monday.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Primary Medical Degree
  • Full Registration and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a current licence to practice (for overseas candidates a licence must be obtained prior to appointment).
  • Higher Specialty qualification: MRCP or equivalent.
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Applicants that are non‑UK trained must show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
  • ALS/ATLS training.
Desirable
  • Relevant experience at a consultant level in a similar setting.
  • Higher Degree (MSc, MD or PhD) or equivalent.
Experience
Essential
  • Experience in GIM and Care of the Elderly.
  • Participation on a general medicine on‑call rota at a consultant level.
  • Evidence of successful interface between secondary and primary care.
Desirable
  • Enthusiastic teacher.
  • Management responsibility / leadership experience.
  • Experience of service development.

  • Participation in Clinical Audit & Risk Management Activities.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to safeguarding young people and vulnerable adults.
  • Evidence of annual appraisal.

Specialist Experience
Essential
  • Clinical management of a Care of the Elderly Service at a regional or national level.
  • Experience in prevention and management of frailty.
Desirable
  • Clinical management of rehabilitation patients.
  • Treatment and management of patients with delirium.
