We are seeking a consultant with enthusiasm, commitment, and drive to work closely with colleagues throughout the organisation and within the community to help lead the organisation.
We are looking to appoint a new substantive head and neck consultant that will enhance the service of our ENT department that covers a population of approximately 560,000 patients with on-call cover population of around 1 million (shared with West Herts NHS Trust). The Trust is the largest in Hertfordshire and in the Integrated care services network.
The Trust has a comprehensive programme of leadership mentoring available for newly qualified Consultants. Opportunities are also available to other Consultant appointees to play an active part in the programme.

Job Responsibilities
- Provide general ENT service with on‑call cover for East, North and West Hertfordshire.
- Work alongside existing consultants to provide cover for the trust and region.
- Develop new services.
- Participate in the department’s teaching, audit, research and educational activities.
- Maintain high‑quality patient‑centred care.
- Share responsibility for the day‑to‑day management of the service.
- Teach and train within the multidisciplinary service.
- Actively involve in multidisciplinary team meetings and directorate clinical governance activity.
- Deliver and develop SACT administration.
- Active participation in continuing medical education.
- Active participation in trial research activities.
Person Specification
Qualifications / Training (Essential)
- Entry on GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview, or provide GMC confirmed eligibility for entry on the Specialist Register.
- Higher surgical training in ENT within a recognised programme.
Qualifications / Training (Desirable)
- Postgraduate degree (or equivalent).
Previous Experience (Essential)
- Broad range of experience in ENT.
- Evidence of experience in Head & Neck surgery, at fellowship or consultant level.
- Experience of supervising undergraduates, doctors in training and other colleagues.
- Ability to offer and be accountable for full and independent expert diagnostic opinion.
- Can evidence leading on patient safety issues and achieving a change in practice.
Previous Experience (Desirable)
- Published papers and original work in peer reviewed journals.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of audit, evidence‑based practice and clinical quality improvement initiatives.
- Demonstrable experience and participation in research.
Skills (Essential)
- Able to evidence engagement with clinical governance and identify errors and learn from them.
- Evidence engagement with appraisal and revalidation.
- Able to show situational awareness and application of good decision making.
- Ability to effectively teach clinical skills.
