An exciting opportunity has arisen to join United Lincolnshire Teaching Hospitals Trust NHS Trust as a Consultant in Accident and Emergency Department at Lincoln County Hospital.

This is a full time consultant in Emergency Medicine appointment. The purpose of this post is to ensure the highest quality of care is provided to each individual patient who attends the department. The appointee will be required to work in a 1:15 on-call rota with a 1:5 weekend frequency. The job plan will be aligned to an 85% DCC and 15% SPA split as per Trust guidance and the on‑call supplement is category A with an 8% supplement.

Any applicant who is unable for personal reasons to work full time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If appointed, modification of the content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Job responsibilities
  • Collaborate and work to maintain emergency medicine in line with strategic requirements.
  • Provide routine and emergency services to the Trust together with colleagues in this specialty and supervise and train junior medical and nursing staff.
  • Participate in the development of emergency department treatment protocols alongside specialty colleagues.
  • Take the lead and be responsible for professional supervision and appraisal of junior medical staff.
  • Participate in the training and assessment of Specialist Registrars/ST Grade doctors rotating through the department.
  • Maintain and develop good communication with colleagues from other specialties and the Primary Care Trust.
  • Demonstrate a firm commitment to clinical governance:
    • Develop and maintain appropriate systems and practices for effective clinical audit in emergency medicine.
    • Attend and contribute to the Trust Clinical Governance Programme.
    • Participate in the Trust Clinical Incident Reporting System.
    • Develop a programme of personal CPD within available resources and workload priorities.
  • Encouraged to develop a special interest that complements existing consultants in the specialty, in accordance with Trust policies.
  • Develop appropriate services and techniques required to fulfil clinical needs within available resources.
Person specification – qualifications (essential)
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (FRCEM)
  • Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Emergency Medicine or equivalent (or expected within 6 months of interview).
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practice.
  • ATLS/ETC & ALS certification.
  • APLS or PALS certification.
Person specification – qualifications (desirable)
  • Leadership or teaching qualification.
  • Dual accreditation in PHEM/PEM.
  • Instructor status in an advanced life support course.
Clinical experience (essential)
  • Broad range of relevant experience in Emergency Medicine, including emergency problems.
  • Evidence of taking full and independent responsibility for clinical work and delivering service without direct supervision.
  • Experience providing ED shop‑floor leadership and supervision.
  • Knowledge and ability to teach all grades of medical and clinical staff, including ACPs, paramedics, nurses, PAs and ENPs.
Clinical governance (essential)
  • Evidenced understanding of clinical governance and ongoing CPD.
  • Experience dealing with complaints management.
  • Experience in morbidity and mortality meetings.
