Job description
Consultant in Critical Care Medicine
Ref: CI229760

We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague to join our Critical Care team in Aberdeen.

Our combined Critical Care unit is one of the largest and busiest in Scotland, providing all aspects of organ support as well as being the nationally commissioned centre for Respiratory ECMO. Within the department there is a strong commitment to service development, including an active quality improvement programme, and there are well established links with the University of Aberdeen both in terms of teaching and research.

The post involves 8 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) sessions in total, with six being in Critical Care and the remaining 2 in another area based on skill set. Eight hours per week (two PAs) will be allocated to Supporting Professional Activities in this post.

For the first two years, one of these SPA sessions will be dedicated to undertake training and achieve independent competence in ECMO retrieval work.

Located on the North East coast of Scotland, Aberdeen is a vibrant, friendly and cosmopolitan city with the benefit of quick and easy access to both its beautiful surrounding countryside and major UK and European destinations.

Full registration with a licence to practise with the GMC is required (licence to practise must be in place prior to starting in post). For more information visit: www.gmc-uk.org

Those trained in the UK should have evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT or be within 6 months of confirmed entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Intensive Care Medicine from date of interview. CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) or Portfolio Pathway route doctors are only eligible to apply for a substantive Consultant post once CESR or Portfolio Pathway specialist registration is awarded. Those with an International Recognised Specialist Qualification approved by GMC should have a confirmed entry on the GMC Specialist Register.

Applications from doctors with appropriate specialist training and experience who are not listed on the GMC Specialist Register can be considered for a Locum Consultant post (up to 12 months) if no substantive Consultant appointment is made. Whilst in locum employment, an application to obtain a CESR or Portfolio Pathway Specialist Registration can be made to the GMC.

Applicants must also be able to demonstrate how their personal values and behaviours align with those of NHS Scotland, and how they put these into practice in the workplace.

Please contact either Dr Douglas Coventry (douglas.coventry@nhs.scot), Clinical Lead, Critical Care or Dr James MacBrayne (james.macbrayne@nhs.scot), Unit Clinical Director, Critical Care. Telephone enquiries should be to the Unit Secretary, Brenda Ferries on 01224 554253.
