This is an exciting opportunity to join the expanding anaesthetic department at Luton & Dunstable Hospital as a vascular anaesthetist. Vascular services will be translocated to the Luton site from Bedford with the expansion of arterial vascular service at Luton.

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic consultant to join our busy, friendly and expanding department.

The appointee will anaesthetise specifically for specialist vascular lists and a variety of other elective surgical specialties. The case mix is interesting; the Trust has a progressive approach to service development and clinician involvement. The non-resident on-call commitment covers emergency surgery and obstetrics. The appointee will participate in a 1:20 on‑call commitment based at Luton & Dunstable Hospital.

Our department is fully committed to teaching and training both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Luton & Dunstable Hospital is located within easy access to central London and the Midlands, with London Luton Airport within fifteen minutes’ drive.

Main duties of the post
  • Maintain the highest clinical standards in the management of patients undergoing anaesthesia.
  • Undertake sessions in vascular theatres, vascular pre‑assessment clinics and MDTs in the vascular anaesthesia service, and flexibly cover various surgical specialities via job planning.
  • Assist on the out‑of‑hours rota covering general emergency, maternity theatre and paediatric emergencies.
  • Work constructively and flexibly with colleagues in the Department of Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine and Integrated Pain Management to provide the best care for patients.
  • Teach and train intermediate‑grade and junior medical staff, nursing staff and medical students.
  • Actively participate in departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit.
  • Carry out Continuing Professional Development (CPD); the Trust is committed to providing the time and financial support for these activities.

Qualifications
  • Medical Degree
  • FRCA or equivalent
  • ALS/ATLS or European equivalent
  • SIA in vascular anaesthesia (or evidence of advanced training in vascular anaesthesia)
  • MD or equivalent Higher Degree or evidence of relevant research
  • Experience in the provision of pre‑operative assessment (general) or vascular patients
  • Accreditation of CPET interpretation or previous experience of CPET interpretation
Registration
  • Full GMC registration (GMC Licence to Practice is mandatory before employment commences)
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register: CCT (or within 6 months of receipt of CCT at time of interview) or CESR (must be on Specialist Register at time of applying)
Clinical Effectiveness
  • Understanding of clinical governance and ability to demonstrate ongoing CPD.
  • Experience of guideline appraisal.
  • Participation in relevant local audits.
  • Ability to interpret and apply clinical research.
  • Participation in relevant national audits, especially in vascular anaesthesia/surgery.
  • Evidence of quality improvement activity in vascular anaesthesia.
Teaching
  • Knowledge and ability to teach all grades of trainees and medical students.
  • Has attended Teaching the Teachers or similar course.
  • Ability to co‑operate in a democratic team environment.
  • Flexible attitude; team player with good management skills.
  • Leadership skills.
Clinical Governance
  • Able to demonstrate a broad understanding of the principles and elements of clinical governance.
Personnel Circumstances
  • Residence within 10 miles by road or up to thirty minutes travelling time of the hospital for purposes of on‑call emergencies.
  • Fit to undertake the role with satisfactory Occupational Health clearance.
  • Satisfactory DBS clearance.
Clinical Experience
  • Excellent all‑round experience of DGH work.
  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Anaesthetics and CEPOD list management skills.
  • Able to take full and independent responsibility for clinical work and delivering service without direct supervision.
  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in vascular Anaesthesia.
  • Additional training in vascular anaesthesia beyond that required for CCT (or equivalent), i.e. a fellowship in vascular anaesthesia.
