Job description

This is an appointment for two replacement, 10PA posts which will beavailable from February 2026.

Our SDEC unit is co-located at SJUH with our Emergency Department (ED),maximising review by the right person in the right place first time, improvingpatient and staff satisfaction and enabling admission avoidance. This is anexciting time to join our expanding team as we embed innovative ways of workingto shape the future model of acute medicine in Leeds. We are looking forenthusiastic, motivated and committed individuals to join our team of AcuteMedicine consultants and work within the Urgent Care CSU to drive forward ourAcute Medicine & SDEC services.

We have two Acute Medical Units with a total of 57 beds and aco-located 3 bedded Enhanced Care Area, called HOBS (High Observation Area). Wehave a strong commitment to the delivery of same day emergency care whichoperates a 7-day service and sees approximately 200 patients per week, as wellas delivering an excellent and established ambulatory VTE service.

Applicants should possess a wide experience in Acute and GeneralMedicine and have excellent team-working skills.

Main duties of the job

Thesuccessful applicants should possess MB BS (or equivalent) and should be includedon the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview,if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointmentregulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the SpecialistRegister.

Applicants should haveestablished skills in Acute Medicine and its related specialties including Same Day Emergency Care. A strongcommitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interestis desirable.

Consideration will be given to applicantswho wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

Job responsibilities

To ensure high quality and safe care of acute medical patients resultingin excellent clinical outcomes.

To contribute to the improvement of the acute medical service bydeveloping admission avoidance and ambulatory care pathways.

To contribute to the care of patients on the acute medical floor and thenew same day emergency care unit, extending the acute medicine consultantpresence across these areas.

To contribute to the out-of-hours provision of acutemedicine on a rota alongside consultant colleagues from diabetes & endocrinology and respiratory medicine.

To show clinical leadership in patient care, service development andclinical governance.

To work co-operatively and effectively as part of thewider acute medicine team, being held to account for clinical, servicedevelopment and training outcomes.

To contribute tothe education and training of staff from a variety of disciplines, particularlyin the management of acute illness.

To work closely with the colleagues in related clinicalareas, in particular the emergency department, other medical and acute surgicalspecialties and with colleagues in primary care and those at the interface e.g.the primary care access line team.

These posts have been developed specifically to work onpathways of care which avoid the need for admission to hospital, and whereadmission occurs to ensure that early discharge to an ambulatory form of care.

Management, Interpersonal Skills & Other Requirements
  • Understanding of current issues in the NHS.
  • *Well organised and skilled in good time management.
  • *Effective interpersonal skills.
  • *Demonstrate ability to relate to and work within a team.
  • -Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.
  • -Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via:
  • -CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview). Portfolio Pathway (or) international applicants should comply with the GMC specialty registration process. Portfolio Pathway applicants must be on the relevant Specialist Register at the time of application.
  • Attendance at recognised management course.
Experience
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all areas of acute medicine including acute hospital services and ambulatory services.
  • Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
Training, Research, Teaching & Audit
  • Should have completed a recognised training programme in in Acute Medicine
  • Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
  • Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
  • Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
  • Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
  • Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
Qualifications
  • AIM SCE
  • Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.
  • YOUR GMC NUMBER MUST BE CLEARLY STATED IN YOUR APPLICATION.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely.
