The Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust invites applications for a Consultant in Acute Medicine based at Wakefield (Pinderfields). The role focuses on the Acute Medical Unit and Same Day Emergency Care, with a 10 PA timetable and dedicated SPA time to support teaching and service development.

We operate across Wakefield and other sites, with 8 WTE substantive consultants and a team including trainees and ACCS, delivering high-quality patient care and ongoing professional development.

Responsibilities

• Provide on-call and consultant-present care across our sites, focusing on AMU and SDEC at Pinderfields.
• Daytime duties as part of the weekly timetable with multiple consultants.
• Evening and weekend on-call duties, paired with a Respiratory lead.
• Support for medical subspecialties through on-call teams; GI bleed and Critical Care support.
• Engage in teaching roles and AIM curriculum as part of SPAs.

Job description

About The Role

This post is offered on a full-time (10 PA) basis although less than full-time applications will be considered.

Duties will be based primarily on our Wakefield (Pinderfields) site although all our medical staff are involved in delivering care to patients on all our sites.

The Acute Medicine Department at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals is supported by 8 WTE substantive consultants plus a number of long-term locum consultants and the following medical team.

• 4 Specialty Training Registrars,
• 4 Internal Medical Trainees,
• 4 ACCS Trainee,
• 4 FY1,
• 2 Physician Associates

The team along with GIM colleagues see approximately 30,000 patients each year, in both an inpatient and same day emergency care (SDEC) setting (split 50:50). The SDEC unit is supported by 16 qualified and trainee advanced clinical practitioners.

Main duties

• Provide on-call and consultant-present care across our sites, with a primary focus on the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) at Pinderfields Hospital and on Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) at Pinderfields Hospital, and each of the team take a share of consultant-present evening and weekend duties, along with the general medical on-call team.
• Daytime Duties: part of the scheduled weekly timetable (below) with four consultants providing concurrent wards in close liaison with a fifth consultant who provides ED in-reach assessment and coordination with the Emergency Department. Support is provided by specialties within the hospital.
• Weekday Evenings: scheduled rounds are provided until 20:00hrs on a (planned)v1:16 basis and will include overnight on-call cover, paired with a Respiratory consultant who leads a parallel round.
• Weekend Daytime: scheduled rounds are provided 09:00-1700hrs on a (planned) 2:8 basis as part of the GIM on-call rota paired with a respiratory consultant who leads a parallel ward round. Weekend overnight on-call cover is 1:16
• Support for medical subspecialties is provided by separate on-call teams. There is a separate GI bleed rota (provided by Gastroenterology). There is Critical Care support with level 2 and 3 care facilities
• Urgent and Emergency Care duties including out-of-hours on-call; schedules will take account of the provisions of working time regulations and safe working.
• Supporting Professional Activities in accordance with the Trust Framework, with at least a minimum of 1.5 SPAs included in the core 10PA timetable. Additional SPA or DCC time may be commissioned in line with the skills of the successful candidate and changing requirements of the service.
  • Examples may include formal teaching responsibilities or departmental leadership roles.
  • Specialist skills as part of the AIM curriculum will also be supported.

Essential Person Specification Requirements

• Full GMC Registration with licence to practise
• Registered for General Medicine
• Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register via one of the following:
• CCT in AIM (or within 6 months of obtaining CCT)
• CESR in AIM
• Medical Degree from recognised medical school
• MRCP or equivalent
• Eligibility to work in the UK
• Recent experience working at registrar or consultant level.
• Demonstrates intelligent and analytical approach to problem solving.
• Good time management.
• Ability to contribute to the development of the Trust and its services.
• Able to communicate clearly and effectively with staff and patients.
• Caring and compassionate
• Flexible, adaptable and a good fit for the team
• Willingness to provide and learn all aspects of hospitals internal systems and processes and adhere to local policies
• Physically able to carry out the duties as specified in the job description and ability to evidence competencies
• Disclosure + Barring Service (DBS) clearance
