Complex interventional endoscopy has been separated from standard service lists and a complex polyp MDT provides a forum for case selection and teaching with the opportunity for endoscopist to develop interventional skills by attending complex lists.
We provide diagnostic and therapeutic EUS and are currently undergoing further expansion with the introduction of ESD. 3 gastroenterologists provide the ERCP service and are supported by a first‑class, pro‑active interventional radiology department and 5 gastrointestinal radiologists.
The Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology is a large, highly developed & innovative department. It has seen massive investment over the last ten years with a large expansion of all aspects of the service.
The hepatology service is delivered by 3 consultants, 1 Consultant Nurse and specialist nurses. A unique community‑based Hepatitis C programme in conjunction with the hospital‑based service was highly commended in the National Quality & Care awards in 2014.
Inpatient hepatology is delivered by luminal gastroenterologists & hepatologists but advice on management of complex inpatient hepatology is readily available.
Over the last few years £3.4m has been spent on fully refurbishing and expanding the endoscopy unit. The department boasts 6 rooms on the Royal Cornwall site and one room at the West Cornwall site. In addition, a new mobile trans‑nasal endoscopy service has been approved and will be operational in the next few months. The department has won awards for innovations in green endoscopy including being the first in the UK to utilise Entonox scrubbing equipment. The endoscopy workforce has also been dramatically expanded and includes new consultant and non‑consultant endoscopists.
Bowel cancer screening has been well established since 2009. We are currently fully age‑extended from 56‑75 and will shortly be extending invitations to 54‑year‑olds.
We have always performed well at QA visits and meet key KPIs. We currently have seven accredited screening colonoscopists performing lists across two sites and a fully staffed admin and SSP nursing team. We are active in national research studies including SEAFOOD and COLO‑PREVENT.
The hospital boasts a 7‑day roaming paracentesis service given by the interventional radiology nurses. We have a keen interest in the development of end‑of‑life pathways & are also proud to have achieved IQILS accreditation level 2.
An Alcohol Liaison Team was commissioned in April 2015 to aid with the delivery of brief interventions to prevent alcohol‑related admissions & is available on the wards 7 days a week.
