Job summary

Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for a consultant in paediatric hepatobiliary and transplant surgery to provide highly specialized HPB, liver, intestinal and renal transplantation and to help develop donor procurement services.

The role is based in the Liver Unit at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital, with collaboration across UHB, and involves on-call duties, MDT participation and the development of transplant programmes.

Responsibilities

• On-call for all pre- and post-transplant related work.
• Evaluation and management of patients readmitted for surgical complications.
• Daily ward rounds and development of management plans.
• Attend multidisciplinary team meetings (Histology, Radiology, Transplant) and MDT ward rounds.
• Participate in elective HPB surgical lists.
• Conduct post-transplant clinic.
• Contribute to Normothermic Regional Perfusion organ procurement and living donor programmes with UHB colleagues.
• Participate in liver unit on-call rotas to cover colleagues’ leave.

Job description

This is a new consultant post in paediatric hepatobiliary and transplant surgery, created to provide continuity of highly specialised hepatobiliary surgery (HPB), liver, intestinal and renal transplantation as part of a strategic succession plan. The post-holder will also be involved in developing donor procurement services that benefit paediatric recipients.
The successful applicant will be based within the Liver Unit at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital (BWC). Surgical activity, including Transplant on-call, will be shared with one Consultant Transplant Surgeon also based at BWC and the Liver Transplant Team based at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust (UHB). Paediatric HPB will be shared with two Paediatric HBP Surgeons at BWC. They will also be expected to participate in the Paediatric renal transplant programme sharing the renal transplant rota with two Liver Unit Surgeons and one Paediatric Urologist currently providing Renal transplant activities. They will also work closely with the organ procurement team at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust. Applicants will be expected to work very closely with Paediatric hepatologists, nephrologist and with the wider, extensive MDT team.
The successful candidate will be undertaking paediatric Liver, Bowel, Renal and Multi-visceral transplants and related activities. In addition, they will also undertake paediatric HPB surgery. This is a strategic succession post and the postholder will be expected to develop their skills under the supervision of senior colleagues. The successful candidate will be expected to be an active member of the Liver Unit and Renal Transplant MDT discussions.

The Clinical Duties, While On-call, Will Be As Follows

• On-call for all pre-and post-transplant related work.
• Evaluation and management of patients re-admitted for surgical complications.
• Daily ward round, evaluation of patients and making the management plans.

The clinical duties, while not on-call, will be as follows:

• Attendance at multi-disciplinary team meetings (Histology, Radiology, - - Transplant, MDT ward rounds).
• Participation in elective HPB surgical lists.
• Conducting the post-transplant clinic
• Participate in the development of Normothermic Regional Perfusion organ procurement, application of new graft ex-vivo perfusion techniques and the living donor programmes, in conjunction with UHB colleagues.
• Participate in the on-call rotas for the Liver Unit including cross-cover to allow colleagues leave.
