Consultant General Surgeon

This is a position for a Consultant General Surgeon. We are looking for an additional colleague to join our specialist team providing complex surgical care for patients across the north-east sector of Manchester.

Main duties of the job
  • To provide safe and effective non‑elective care for patients requiring surgical admission whilst on‑call
  • To support elective care as required through outpatient clinics, endoscopy lists and day surgery as the timetable allows
  • To participate in relevant clinical and educational supervision duties and governance

Skills
  • Capable of independently managing the acute on‑call surgical take
  • 2+ years of on‑call consultant experience
Knowledge, Training & Experience
  • Experience commensurate with working independently to provide Colorectal cancer resections
  • Wide experience in routine elective surgery
  • Broad experience in the management of all aspects of general surgical emergencies including basic Paediatric emergencies
  • Skills in laparoscopic surgery that would allow the appointee to undertake the elective workload of the department e.g. cholecystectomy, hernia repair
  • Experience in gastrointestinal endoscopy
  • Good understanding of Clinical Governance
  • Evidence of audit work and where this has brought about change
  • Evidence of participation in research
  • Evidence of relevant peer reviewed papers and other publications (e.g. book chapter, book editor, case report - not abstracts or letters)
  • 2+ years experience working independently treating patients with Colorectal cancer
  • Research Skills: Publication of research articles, demonstrating understanding of research methodology and commitments
Professional Registration
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council with a valid licence to practice
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register / Admission to the Register within 6 months of interview (CCST, CCT / CESR in General Surgery)
  • Evidence of Accredited Clinical & Educational Supervision of Medical Learners
Qualifications
  • FRCS or show evidence of equivalent training and experience
  • Post Graduate Degree e.g. MD, PhD, MSc
