Consultant Gastroenterologist

ULHG is seeking a Consultant Gastroenterologist to join our expanding team at Aintree. This role is central to our commitment to strengthening Gastroenterology and Hepatology services and delivering high-quality, patient‑centred care for a large and complex patient population.

The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of evidence-based gastroenterology care, support multidisciplinary working, and help strengthen clinical pathways across the service in line with national standards. Responsibilities include inpatient gastroenterology, endoscopy, and participation in the consultant on-call rota. Our JAG‑accredited endoscopy unit has a strong research portfolio and close links with the University of Liverpool.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a high‑acuity teaching hospital with scope to shape and develop services and contribute to ongoing clinical innovation.

Applicants must hold full GMC registration, MRCP(UK) (or equivalent), and be on the Specialist Register (or within six months of CCT at interview). Informal enquiries and site visits are welcome.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities

The successful applicant will join a dedicated consultant team delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred gastroenterology care at Aintree University Hospital, with opportunities to develop clinical, educational and leadership interests within a high‑acuity environment.

Core Responsibilities Include:

  • Gastroenterology Care: Provide comprehensive luminal gastroenterology services and contribute to the continued development of evidence‑based pathways across the specialty.
  • Inpatient Care: Participate in the consultant‑led rotational "hot week" model, overseeing inpatients and ward referrals, supported by junior medical staff and specialist nurses.
  • Outpatient Clinics & Endoscopy: Deliver general gastroenterology outpatient clinics and diagnostic/therapeutic endoscopy lists, including training and supervision within a JAG‑accredited unit.
  • GI Bleed & On‑Call: Join the 1:11 consultant on‑call rota, covering emergency GI bleeds, acute referrals and inpatient reviews, fully job‑planned in line with national terms.
  • Multidisciplinary Working: Participate in relevant MDTs to support safe, coordinated and evidence‑based care across specialties.
  • Education, Research & Service Development: Contribute to teaching, clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and service innovation aligned to Trust priorities.

Job Summary

This is a full‑time substantive Consultant post in Gastroenterology at Aintree University Hospital, part of the University Hospitals Liverpool Group (UHLG). The post holder will join a cohesive consultant team delivering high‑quality, patient‑centred care across a busy teaching hospital providing luminal gastroenterology, hepatology and endoscopy services.

Clinical Responsibilities Provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology care, contributing to evidence‑based, multidisciplinary practice. Take part in the two‑week rotational hot week model, leading ward rounds, inpatient reviews and clinical coordination. Deliver diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, supporting JAG standards and training. Participate in the 1:11 out‑of‑hours rota covering emergency gastroenterology and GI bleed pathways.

Multidisciplinary Working Engage in relevant MDTs, including UGI and colorectal cancer, HPB, liver, nutrition and pelvic floor, supporting safe and coordinated care.

Teaching and Education Teach and supervise medical students, trainees and other professionals, and contribute to endoscopy training. Participation in departmental education, governance and teaching programmes is expected.

Quality Improvement, Governance and Research Support audit, QI activity, governance processes and research in line with departmental and Trust priorities. Contribute to service development and improvement initiatives.

Job Plan and Support The post comprises 10 PAs (8.5 DCC, 1.5 SPA), with potential for additional SPA by agreement. Office space, IT access and administrative support will be provided. Participation in appraisal and revalidation is required.

Qualifications
  • MB ChB / MB BS (or equivalent)
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians
  • Higher degree (MD or PhD) or submitted pending viva
Registration
  • Full GMC registration and licence to practise (or eligible for)
  • On GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of achieving CCT at time of interview
