Job Summary

Nominal base either Bishop Auckland Hospital or Darlington Memorial Hospital, to be discussed with the successful candidate.

This is an exciting opportunity to work with a team of dynamic and experienced community paediatricians in an active and progressive department at County Durham & Darlington NHS Foundation Trust. The role includes direct clinical activity along with opportunities for clinical leadership development, education, training and clinical research.

There may also be an opportunity, pending your interests, to explore a mix of Gen Paed acute and Community Paediatrics job plans.

The post holder will provide consultant input into the child development and Neurodevelopmental service, and conduct Initial Health Assessments for Children in Care.

We would also welcome applications from Associate Specialists who wish to progress a career within community paediatrics.

Main Duties
  • Maintain high‑quality, patient‑centred care.
  • Teach and train within the multidisciplinary service.
  • Actively participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and directorate clinical governance activity.

About Us

We provide hospital services from two acute sites – Darlington Memorial Hospital and University Hospital of North Durham – and a centre for planned care in Bishop Auckland. Care is also delivered from community hospitals in Chester‑Le‑Street, Shotley Bridge, Barnard Castle, Sedgefield and Weardale, as well as over 80 other community‑based settings and patients’ homes.

Salary & Contract

Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 per year (YC72 Pay Scale pro rata).

Contract: Permanent. Working pattern: Full‑time or Part‑time.

Job Responsibilities
  • Work with a dedicated team of community and developmental paediatric consultants to deliver holistic, multi‑disciplinary care to children with developmental disorders and complex health needs.
  • Collaborate with specialist community nurses, paediatric therapists and child psychologists.
  • Liaise with primary care, education (including health advice for Special Education Needs and Disability assessment) and social services to deliver care.
  • Support statutory services such as Children in Care Initial Health assessments, and safeguard assessments of physical injuries and neglect.
  • Contribute to service development, departmental clinical governance and annual appraisals towards GMC revalidation.
  • Participate in postgraduate training and support paediatric trainees.
  • Potentially undertake the role of Designated Doctor for Children in Care, accountable to NHS North East & North Cumbria ICB (if personal specification met).

Statutory Registration (Essential)

  • Full registration and licence to practice with the General Medical Council, or eligibility if currently working overseas.

Special Requirements (Essential)

Qualifications (Essential)

  • CCT/CCST or equivalent accreditation in community paediatrics, or equivalent training and experience.
  • MRCP, MRCPCH or equivalent.
  • On specialist register or within 6 months of CCT at interview time.
  • Approved Level 3 training in child protection/safeguarding and competencies for children in care.
  • PET Level 3 training or SPIN in epilepsy.

Desirable

  • Sheffield neurodisability diploma or equivalent experience.
  • Evidence of previous experience in epilepsy clinics.
  • Experience in neuro‑disability or neuro‑development clinics for complex conditions.
  • Specialist experience/training in particular areas of CCH practice.
  • Attendance at recognised teaching courses.
  • Publications or presentations at national/international level.
  • Research experience and interest.

Experience (Essential)

  • Experience in General Paediatrics and Paediatric Neurodevelopment/epilepsy.
  • Relevant higher specialist training or evidence of equivalent competencies.
  • Independently responsible clinical care of complex patients.
  • Teaching experience across various settings.
  • Audit/QIP experience and leadership of multidisciplinary teams.

Special Skills & Knowledge (Essential)

  • Experience in disability and neurodevelopmental paediatrics.
  • Experience or willingness to conduct initial health assessments for children in care.
  • Effective communication and teamwork.
  • Comprehensive assessment skills with psychosocial knowledge.
  • Management of child epilepsy at second‑tier level.
  • Advocacy for children in any forum.
  • Leadership ability to drive change in multidisciplinary contexts.

  • High‑level IT skills.
  • Knowledge of recognised tools for developmental disorder assessment.
  • Understanding of multi‑agency working for children with neurodevelopmental disorders and children in care.
