Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a permanent Consultant Anaesthetist to join our team. This role will service elective and emergency lists at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital site in the Main Theatres, the Day Surgery Unit and the Sandringham Unit.
In this role you will collaborate with Consultant Anaesthetists to ensure comprehensive and coordinated high quality anaesthetic services that meet the requirements of the Trust's objectives.
Time is allocated for supporting professional activities and these will be scheduled by mutual agreement with the successful candidate.

Main duties of the job

Clinical

To provide a consultant-level anaesthetic service for elective and emergency services

To provide high quality patient care, minimising risks and maintaining patient safety in accordance with the GMC's Good Medical Practice

To help in the delivery of effective services within the agreed budget

To co-operate with other departments and agencies to meet the objectives of the Anaesthetic Department

To accept to work flexibly within a nominally fixed timetable

Organisational / Managerial

To supervise junior staff as appropriate

To provide leadership and health-management skills

To maintain the Directorate principles of effective multi-disciplinary team working

To ensure personal knowledge of, and compliance with, Trust and departmental protocol

Teaching

To help provide training, supervision and career development to junior doctors of all grades in the Anaesthetic Department

To contribute to the education of medical and nursing students, paramedics and trainees in other specialities as required. We have recently increased our teaching commitments to the medical schools of Cambridge University and the University of East Anglia

Essential qualifications and registration

MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.

FRCA or equivalent medical qualification

Entry on GMC Specialist Register for anaesthesia (CCT) or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of specialist training at the time of interview. If not eligible for entry on to the Specialist Register, must be able to provide strong evidence of meeting CESR eligibility criteria.

Essential experience

Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Anaesthetics.

At least seven years of providing obstetric anaesthesia

At least seven years of providing emergency / on call anaesthesia

At least seven years of providing major trauma anaesthesia

At least seven years of providing resuscitation care

At least two years of providing critical care medicine

Essential skills, abilities and training

Formal training and experience in management relevant to anaesthesia in the NHS or equivalent training or experience elsewhere, for example Head of Department, Governance Lead or similar lead role.

Experience of teaching trainees to a standard required by the RCoA (with evidence of suitable teaching / supervision qualification)

Ability to supervise and initiate quality improvement projects by trainees and to develop trainee presentations at national and international level.

Ability to deliver teaching for both undergraduates and postgraduates.

Evidence of affecting clinical governance.

Experience of various audits in which you played lead role, together with contributions to service improvement and risk management projects.
