Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, dynamic Consultant to join our organisation to work in a substantive position as a Consultant Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatrist. This post is one of two Consultant Adolescent Inpatient Psychiatry posts for Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust. This post holder will provide clinical leadership for the Hope Unit - Adolescent in-patient service with a focus on assessment / short stay treatments, utilising an acute care pathway (6-8 week admissions).
Responsibilities
- Lead the clinical team in a regional service, providing emergency, urgent and elective multi-disciplinary assessment & treatment for adolescent inpatients with complex or enduring mental health problems.
- Provide specialist consultation and advice to referring MH teams (CAMHS and Working Age Adult MH Services), Local Authorities and CCGs across the Trust footprint & across the NW, pertaining to young people with complex mental health care needs.
- Take clinical responsibility for all inpatients on the Hope unit and manage a caseload of clients receiving direct high intensity input.
- Adhere to policies & procedures, maintain clinical records, confidentiality & admin.
- Work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team; participate in and help lead referrals, admission & discharge planning, CPA reviews, and handover to Borough MH teams & Local Authorities; provide updates for commissioners.
- Utilise the Care Programme Approach, The Mental Health Act, The Children Act and The Mental Capacity Act as required.
- Collaborate with other professionals/agencies involved in the care of young people across departmental and organisational boundaries.
- Provide clinical supervision to junior medical staff and contribute to supervision of other practitioners within the department.
- Lead in medical and mental health practice using a clinical governance framework; maintain professional standards and participate in governance activities.
Safeguarding, Governance and On-Call
- Practice within a clinical governance framework; contribute to annual audit; work with CAMHS Directorate Senior Leadership team and commissioners to develop the Complex Care Inpatient service.
- Engage in safeguarding activities and mandatory training; adhere to Trust and Local Authority protocols.
- On-Call: participate in on-call rotas appropriate to sub-specialty; additional remuneration for on-call availability.
Teaching, Audit, Research and CPD
- Participate in teaching and supervision of junior medical staff and other professionals; opportunities to engage in MRCPsych teaching and medical student teaching.
- Participate in clinical audit and governance; contribute to the Trust's governance arrangements and bi-monthly CAMHS Consultants meetings.
- Involvement in research activities within the Trust’s Research Unit; CPD requirements of the Royal College of Psychiatrists; study leave funding provided.
Job plans, appraisal and facilities
- Agree a Job Plan under the Consultant Contract with the CAMHS Clinical Director; typically full-time employment for 10 PAs with proportionate distribution for less than full-time work.
- Annual job plan review and appraisal in line with contract; bespoke planning meetings if plans change.
- Hope Unit facilities include designated office, Trust laptop, access to intranet and library facilities; administrative support from a medical secretary; travel support where needed.
Leave, welfare and support
- 32 days annual leave per annum, with enhancements; mutual cover arrangements within Hope and Horizon Units; study leave aligned with national terms and conditions (10 days/year).
Qualifications and experience
Educational Qualifications
- Full GMC Registration
- Desirable: Published research; MRCPsych
Professional/Occupational Qualifications
- Possession of CCT in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry or General Adult Psychiatry, or within 6 months of achieving this, or on the GMC Specialist Register; Section 12 Approval or eligible for approval; Approved Clinician Status.
- Desirable: Other postgraduate degrees (MSc, MD, MRCP); experience with the Mental Health Act (1983).
Job Training and Experience
- Evidence of competencies from PMETB higher training in either Child & Adolescent Psychiatry or General Adult psychiatry; CPD registered with RCPsych.
- Desirable: Experience in a whole-time Adolescent Service.
Skills
- Excellent leadership; ability to work across organisational boundaries; innovative, flexible team working; strong audit experience; excellent communication and teaching skills; cultural competency.
- Desirable: Prior evidence of clinical leadership, service development, care pathway establishment, and publishing audits.
