Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Consultant in Acute Medicine to join the team at Torbay Hospital. The role covers the Acute Medicine Unit, SDEC and Acute Assessment Area, with leadership in patient care, teaching and governance.
You will work with a multidisciplinary team to ensure high standards from admission to discharge. The ideal candidate will hold Full GMC Registration, CCT or equivalent, and ALS, with a track record in acute medicine and education.
As a Consultant in Acute Medicine at Torbay Hospital, you will provide the highest quality patient care across our Acute Medicine domain, which includes our Acute Medicine Unit (AMU), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and the Acute Assessment Aerea.
Patient safety, dignity and care are central to our ethos, and as a senior member of the team, you will be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients with acute medical conditions, ensuring that they receive a ‘second-to-none’ standard of care from admission to discharge. You will work closely with other consultants, resident doctors, and multi-disciplinary teams to ensure patient pathways operate unhindered.
Please note: Priority will be given to applicants with recognised 'Priority' or 'At Risk' status, including NHS staff identified across Devon.
The Acute Medicine team is responsible for the care of patients on the Acute Medical Unit and SDEC, alongside providing an Acute Medicine in-reach service in the Emergency Department during daytime hours. The general medical on-call work is shared with general medical colleagues from a range of specialties. We have excellent working relationships with the specialty physicians, with specialty advice easily available via a hot phone system.
There is a well-established multi-disciplinary team structure in our clinical areas, with daily business MDT board rounds. The emergency assessment ward receives excellent Friends and Family feedback, and the nursing staff maintain a strong, caring team approach in a busy, high turnover environment. Feedback has particularly highlighted the excellent team communication. The therapy and discharge team take a proactive role in discharge planning and can access a range of intermediate care services to support discharge to the community. We also benefit from in-reach support from critical care, acute oncology and a range of other specialist nursing services.
The Acute Medical Unit is adjacent to the Emergency Department and Outpatient facilities. This is a dedicated non-ward area as an assessment unit and includes purpose-built same-day emergency care and frailty facilities.
You will be joining the organisation at an exciting time. As the first fully integrated care organisation in England, we are working to improve the way we deliver safe, high-quality health and social care. We have a positive and vibrant working atmosphere, we are proud of our investment in our staff both in terms of developing potential career skills and valuing people.
If you provide support to a family member or friend with health or care needs, we aim to be a Carer-friendly employer. We have a ‘Staff Carers’ policy which includes flexible working where possible and a Carer’s Passport scheme that links you into support and discounts.
