Expected Start Date: ASAP Working for Quattro (UK) Ltd Quattro (UK) Ltd is a well-established construction and materials business, providing a wide range of services across London and the surrounding counties. Its operations include ready-mixed concrete, aggregates, recycling, waste management, plant hire and land remediation, supporting customers across the construction and civil engineering industries.


As an Materials Technician Apprentice, you’ll support testing and quality control across Quattro’s concrete, aggregate and soil operations. The role would suit someone practical, technically minded and keen to learn, with an interest in chemistry and understanding how different materials behave. You’ll need to be comfortable working both on site and with test results, reports and other technical information. There will also be opportunities to learn and develop your knowledge across different areas of the business.


The Package


  • Starting Salary: National Minimum Wage for your age (Potential for a higher starting salary depending on relevant experience)

  • Annual Leave: 28 days per year, including bank holidays

  • Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 7:00am to 5:00pm, 50 paid hours per week (Included is 30-minutes of paid lunch break daily)

Key Responsibilities

We are pleased to offer an opportunity for a Materials Technician Apprentice to join the team, supporting testing and quality control across Quattro’s materials operations.


Skills

This apprenticeship provides an opportunity to develop practical and technical skills across concrete, aggregates and soils, with training and support provided as you develop your knowledge:



  • Carry out ready-mixed concrete testing, including slump testing and making and testing concrete cubes.

  • Carry out aggregate testing and sampling, including gradings and quality checks.

  • Visit different sites as part of the role, supporting materials testing and quality control activities.

  • Record and maintain test results and quality documentation.

  • Assist with general materials quality control across Quattro’s concrete and aggregate operations.

  • Review waste and contamination reports, including chemical laboratory reports for soils and other materials.

  • Develop an understanding of whether materials are likely to be inert, non-hazardous or hazardous, and whether they are suitable for acceptance at Quattro’s different facilities.

  • Help with compliance paperwork and environmental records.

  • Support transport, planning and wider operations.

  • Assist with quotations, invoicing and accounts administration.

  • Communicate with customers, laboratories, drivers and site teams.

  • Develop your practical and technical knowledge across concrete, aggregates and soils as you train towards becoming a Materials Technician.


About You

You’re practical, technically minded and enjoy hands‑on work, but you’re also curious about the science behind the materials you’re working with. You’re interested in understanding how materials behave, how their quality is tested and what test results can tell you about whether a material is suitable for its intended use.


You’re comfortable being on site and getting involved in practical testing, whether that’s working with ready‑mixed concrete, taking aggregate samples or helping with general materials quality control. You’re detail‑focused and understand the importance of accurately recording test results and maintaining quality documentation.


An Interest Or Background In Chemistry, Science Or Materials Science Would Be a Real Advantage, Particularly As There Is Scope To Develop Your Knowledge Of Soils And Other Materials. You Don’t Need Previous Experience In This Area, But You Should Be Willing To Learn, Comfortable Working With Both Practical Tasks And Technical Information, And Motivated To Develop Into a Materials Technician Across Concrete, Aggregates And Soils.


Apprenticeship Eligibility

Apprenticeship Eligibility To Apply For This Apprenticeship, You Must



  • Be 16 or over

  • Not be in full‑time education

  • Have lived in the UK for at least 3 years

  • Have the right to work in the UK


Please note: A full UK driving licence is required due to the nature of this role.


Apprenticeships are designed to provide new knowledge, skills and behaviours, so applicants should not already hold a Level 3, degree or higher qualification in a closely related subject, or have significant experience in the same field.

As part of this Level 3 Materials Technician apprenticeship, you’ll learn how to carry out tests, analyse data, and contribute to important projects, whether that’s in a laboratory or a more practical, site-based environment.

Over 20 months, you’ll combine day‑to‑day experience in your role with structured training delivered by expert tutors at Tiro. Our blended learning approach includes a mix of online sessions, in‑person training, and hands‑on support, alongside guidance from a dedicated mentor in the workplace.


You’ll spend at least 6 hours per week on off‑the‑job training, including virtual learning, practical activities, and applied assignments.

You’ll follow a structured programme combining live sessions, online learning, and hands‑on workplace training to build your skills step by step.


What could your future look like?

This apprenticeship will help you build the skills and experience needed to start your career as a materials technician and progress within the industry.


Through hands‑on training, you’ll develop the competence and confidence to carry out laboratory testing and take on increasing responsibility in your role. This programme can also lead to professional recognition, such as becoming a Registered Science Technician (RSciTech).


You’ll gain experience that’s valued across a wide range of technical and scientific roles, opening up opportunities to grow and specialise in your chosen field.


If you choose to continue your development, you may also have the opportunity to progress onto higher‑level qualifications, such as degree apprenticeships in Materials or Chemistry.
