About the role

In this role you will lead the financial impact assessments of Connections Reform processes changes within the Finance, Fees and Securities team (FF&S).

You will be responsible for understanding the change landscape associated with Connections Reform and manging the impacted changes through collaboration across the programme, with industry partners, and the CFO.

This role will require working closely with FF&S workstreams to develop a holistic view of changes and how the implementation of that will impact NESO. You will be responsible for overseeing the Final Sums Exploration process with the transmission owners, including co-creating and running an efficient and transparent process to identify and pay for abortive works.

This role can be based in Warwick, Wokingham or Glasgow, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.

Key accountabilities
  • Performing scenario planning to model potential financial outcomes and inform strategic discussions.
  • Translating numbers into actionable insights including options and recommendations for decision-makers
  • Collaborating with Connections Reform team, CFO, and Regulatory teams through fact-based analysis and acting as a trusted advisor on financial implications.
  • Monitoring financial risk indicators, identify emerging threats, and implement appropriate mitigation strategies
  • Ensuring compliance with regulatory obligations, financial reporting and data security
  • Escalating and presenting key areas of risk and concern on financial impacts
  • Creating delivery board level papers, including options and recommendations, to ensure that all decisions are well-informed and aligned with strategic goals.
  • Be aware of any political, economic, and social developments that may impact NESO and the Connections Team
  • Overseeing the Final Sums Exploration process with the TOs, a one-off process for identifying and paying for abortive works resulting from Connections Reform.
    • Representing NESO in working sessions with Ofgem and the Tos.
    • Gathering input from across NESO to determine NESO positions, and provide recommendations to NESO leadership to support timely decision-making and risk management

A competitive salary between £60,000 - £65,000pa – dependent on experience and capability.

About the National Energy System Operator (NESO)

In Autumn of 2024, the ESO transitioned to National Energy System Operator, or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO), the new National Energy System Operator is the independent body responsible for planning Great Britain’s electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.

NESO, including all of its existing roles, are now at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO, we will build on our existing roles, capabilities, and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users’ need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors, including electricity, natural gas and hydrogen, and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.

The organisation is set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, with complete operational independence from government, the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As was the ESO, NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable, affordable and secure way for all.
