Business UnitVBU - TrakM8Job DescriptionJob PurposeThe ConnectedCare Engineer owns the vehicle diagnostics capability behind ConnectedCare, Trakm8's vehicle connectivity firmware. This is primarily an aftermarket diagnostics reverse engineering and authoring role: capturing and analysing manufacturer-specific vehicle data, reverse engineering how each make, model and variant presents its diagnostic data, fault codes (DTCs) and fit data, and authoring the decoding definitions and vehicle profiles that ConnectedCare uses in the field. This role restores and secures that capability within the Devices team.The role covers the full lifecycle: extending vehicle coverage to new makes, models and variants, authoring and validating decoding definitions and fit data, testing on the bench and in vehicles, documentation, and acting as the technical escalation point for vehicle connectivity and diagnostic data issues raised by Customer Success. It is not primarily a firmware development role; the engineer works alongside firmware colleagues where changes need firmware support. Customers make fleet, maintenance and fault management decisions based on the data this capability produces, so accuracy and reliability are central. The engineer is expected to build strong documented knowledge of vehicle coverage and decoding logic so that capability is never again dependent on a single person's undocumented knowledge.Key Responsibilities:Diagnostics Reverse Engineering & AuthoringCapture and analyse CAN bus and diagnostic data from vehicles to reverse engineer manufacturer-specific parameters, fault codes (DTCs) and diagnostic responsesAuthor, test and release the decoding definitions and vehicle profiles that ConnectedCare uses across the supported vehicle estateExtend vehicle coverage to new makes, models and variants in line with commercial prioritiesMaintain and improve vehicle fit data and connection profiles, including OBD-II, UDS and J1939 based diagnosticsOwnership & KnowledgeTake full ownership of the ConnectedCare decoding libraries, vehicle profiles and reverse engineering toolchainDocument vehicle coverage, decoding logic and reverse engineering findings so knowledge is shared, not siloedBuild and share vehicle diagnostics knowledge across the wider Devices teamQuality & TestingValidate the accuracy of decoded diagnostic data, fault codes and fit data on the bench and in vehicles before releaseDevelop and maintain test rigs, captures and automated checks for decoding definitionsContribute to the team's quality standards, review practices and release disciplineSupport & EscalationAct as the technical (L3) escalation point for vehicle connectivity and diagnostic data issues, performing root cause analysis across vehicle, device and decoding layersWork with Customer Success and Service Delivery to resolve field issues within agreed service levelsIdentify trends in connectivity faults, decoding errors and repeat issues, and feed fixes into the roadmapCollaboration & ImprovementWork with the Devices Team Lead on planning, estimation and prioritisation, including new vehicle coverage requestsWork with firmware engineers where coverage or fixes require firmware changes, and with platform and cloud teams on the end-to-end flow of vehicle dataMake effective use of AI-assisted analysis and development tools in line with team practicesSkills / Experience / Competency Required:Essential3+ years of experience in automotive diagnostics, vehicle telematics or a closely related engineering fieldHands-on experience capturing and analysing CAN bus data, with common analysis tools (e.g. CANalyzer, PCAN, SavvyCAN)Proven experience reverse engineering undocumented or manufacturer-specific vehicle data, protocols or binary formatsWorking knowledge of vehicle diagnostic protocols: OBD-II as a minimum, ideally UDS (ISO 14229) or J1939Scripting skills (e.g. Python) for data capture, analysis and toolingMethodical, evidence-based approach to validating decoded data before releaseComfortable taking ownership of an existing body of work, learning it quickly and working with limited handoverDisciplined approach to testing, version control and documentationClear written and verbal communication, including with non-technical colleaguesDesirableAbility to read and navigate C/C++ firmware code (this is not primarily a firmware development role)Experience in the vehicle aftermarket: diagnostics tools, telematics retrofit, ECU tuning or similarCAN FD, DoIP or manufacturer-specific diagnostic experienceExperience building or using vehicle test benches, simulators or HIL rigsKnowledge of vehicle electrical architectures and EV-specific diagnosticsExperience providing L3 support or working closely with customer support teamsExperience with AI-assisted tools for large-scale data analysisPersonal Attributes:Naturally curious puzzle-solver who enjoys making sense of undocumented data and protocolsTakes genuine ownership and sees problems through to resolutionQuality-driven, understanding that customers make fleet and maintenance decisions on the data this capability producesPatient and persistent; comfortable with investigations that take time to crackSelf-sufficient and resourceful, but knows when to ask for helpCollaborative team player who documents and shares knowledge willinglyOur Values:We’re a close-knit team who care about each other, our customers and making a positive impact, our values drive who we are and the decisions we make:Caring & Committed – We show up for each other and deliver with dedicationMake a Difference – We create impact that mattersRelentless – We push forward until we succeedDo the Right Thing – We choose integrity every timeJoy of the Journey – We enjoy the ride and celebrate along the wayHealth & Safety:As a Trakm8 Group employee, you have the following H&S responsibilities:To comply with the Group H&S policy and proceduresTo take care of your own health and safety and that of people who may be affected by what you do (or what you do not do)To co-operate with others on health and safetyTo not interfere with, or misuse, anything provided for your health, safety or welfareTo wear/use the correct Protective Equipment at all timesTo follow the training you have received at all timesInformation Security:As a Trakm8 Group employee, you have the following Information Security responsibilities:To follow the Group Information Security policies at all times;To follow the Trakm8 Secure Development Policy at all times;To ensure that passwords under your responsibility are kept confidential;To keep Group or Company information secure and confidential at all times;To inform your manager immediately if you detect, suspect or witness an incident that may be a breach of securityThis role requires screening in the below areas:ReferencesPre-Employment Credit CheckThe above job description is meant to describe the general nature and level of work being performed;
