Job description

Computer Science Researcher (CompSci Researcher)

Halifax, West Yorkshire - Full relocation package available

Up to 60,000 + Bonus + Benefits

Must be willing to undergo a high security clearance

Are you a Computer Science researcher with a PhD who wants to take research beyond academic papers and turn it into technology that solves real-world problems?

This role sits within a software engineering team delivering both internal and customer-funded research, developing proof-of-concepts and prototypes that can ultimately become future operational capabilities. The work covers complex computer science challenges within secure environments, with a strong focus on experimentation, innovation and practical delivery.

You'll be responsible for conducting research, designing experiments using the scientific method, documenting findings and presenting outcomes to technical and non-technical stakeholders. You'll also work closely with software engineers to turn research into working prototypes.

The key experience required is:
  • PhD in Computer Science or a closely related subject
  • Experience conducting innovative Computer Science research
  • Strong Java development skills, alongside some Python and Bash
  • Experience designing experiments and applying the scientific method
  • Strong research report writing and presentation skills

Experience within privacy research, vulnerability research, mobile applications, cellular networks such as 5G or non-HTTP network protocols would be particularly relevant.

Because of the nature of the projects, you'll need to understand security principles around confidentiality, integrity and availability, including areas such as SSO, two-factor authentication and certificate-based authentication.

The role is predominantly based near Halifax, with occasional travel and overnight stays at customer and partner locations.

You must be a British national and willing to undergo Developed Vetting (DV) due to the sensitivity of the work.

The package includes a 6% employer pension contribution, 25 days' holiday plus bank holidays, annual discretionary bonus, life and critical illness cover, private virtual GP access, electric car salary sacrifice scheme and relocation allowance.

If you want to combine high-level Computer Science research with hands‑on development and see your work progress into real operational technology, this is an opportunity to do exactly that.
