Job summary

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust in Rothbury invites applications for a Community Staff Nurse (Band 5) to join the District Nursing Service in Rural Rothbury, working with GPs and Rothbury Cottage Care. You will care for patients in their homes, residential settings and clinics, with development opportunities across the District Nursing Service.

Applicants must have a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.

Qualifications

  • State Registration on Part 1 of the 3 part NMC register
  • Additional clinical qualifications or equivalent derived through experience at diploma/degree level if experienced
  • Newly qualified staff will be required to undertake the Trust preceptorship programme within the first year in post.
  • Evidence of qualification to undertake the supervision, teaching and assessing of students (essential requirement for post, expectation this will be completed within an 18 month period unless post is bank only)

Responsibilities

  • Community staff nurses work autonomously and as part of a team, reporting directly to their line manager, the community nursing team lead, assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care for a diverse group of patients with a wide range of conditions and health needs.
  • The development and delivery of programmes of health and social care.
  • The delivery of care and support to patients with a terminal illness and their families including emotional and bereavement support.
  • The performance of skilled nursing care including wound management, palliative care and catheterisation.
  • Performance of diagnostic tests such as Ankle Brachial Pressure Index using Doppler and interpretation of results to decide further action.
  • Performance of procedures requiring dexterity such as venepuncture, injections and removal of sutures.
  • Interpretation of results and communication to patients and carers.
  • Maintenance and promotion of high standards of professional practice and accountability.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic staff nurse to join the District Nursing Service in Rural Rothbury for a Community Staff Nurse. Working closely with GPs and Rothbury Cottage Care.

Main duties of the job

Community staff nurses work autonomously and as part of a team, reporting directly to their line manager, the community nursing team lead, assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care for a diverse group of patients with a wide range of conditions and health needs.

  • The performance of skilled nursing care including aspects of assessment, wound management, palliative care and catheterisation.
  • The performance of diagnostic tests such as Ankle Brachial Pressure Index using Doppler and the interpretation of the results to decide further courses of action.
  • Performance of procedures which require fine dexterity and skill such as venepuncture, drug administration by injection and the removal of sutures.
  • Interpretation of results and the communication of these to patients e.g. blood glucose estimation. Explaining aspects of care to patients and carers allowing the opportunity to ask questions and raise concerns.
  • Maintenance and promotion of high standards of professional practice including the sharing of approaches and experience with others.
  • Maintain a duty of care to patients, carers and colleagues through the exercise of personal and professional accountability.

Other Requirements
  • It is an essential requirement of the role that the post holder has a valid driving licence and is either a car owner and able to use the car for work purposes, or has a Trust personal lease vehicle which may be used for the role. However, the Trust would consider making reasonable adjustments to the role, if necessary, to enable a disabled person to undertake the role.
Experience and Knowledge
  • Experience of working without direct supervised in a health care environment
  • Ensuring the delivery of ‘Compassion in Practice’ - Nursing, Midwifery and Care Staff Vision and Strategy, incorporating the 6C’s
  • Knowledge of or experience in coaching and mentoring practices and tools
  • Knowledge of or experience in Quality improvement tools, techniques and methods
