Community Learning Disability Nurse – North

Position: Permanent, part‑time 30 hours per week

The Community Learning Disability Nurse for the North locality (Cheltenham) will be a key member of a multi‑disciplinary care team and will require experience in community care. The successful candidate will work independently to deliver safe and effective services for people with complex needs in addition to their learning disability, including mental health, epilepsy, and dementia.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work independently to ensure timely delivery of a safe and effective service for people who have a range of complex needs in addition to their learning disability.
  • Manage a complex and high‑risk caseload over a large geographical area, linking with other professionals and agencies to achieve positive outcomes for service users.
  • Work flexibly based on client need and use reasonable adjustments to support clients, families and carers.
  • Ensure systems and processes are followed in accordance with Trust objectives.
Main Duties

You will benefit from working closely with highly experienced and approachable clinicians in the team. In addition to the Trust’s excellent mentorship programme, we will support you through appraisals, mentoring, clinical and peer supervision.

Clinical Work
  • Work according to the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Professional Conduct and relevant professional guidelines as a care coordinator, taking responsibility for the assessment of care and health education needs.
  • Engage in complex health assessments as appropriate and plan relevant care in partnership with service users, carers and other professionals, ensuring individual needs are met.
Qualifications
  • Registered Nurse Learning Disabilities (RNLD)
  • Evidence of continued professional development (Essential)
  • Formal teaching and assessing course (FLAP / FLIP)
  • Registration as a non‑medical prescriber with the NMC having undertaken the necessary Level 3 training
  • Evidence of formal post‑registration learning
Experience
  • Demonstrable post‑qualification experience in learning disabilities or a related area, including community setting experience
  • Extensive experience of first‑line assessments including risk assessment
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Experience of collaboration with other agencies, including the voluntary sector
  • Previous experience of autonomous working
  • European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) – desirable
Professional/Managerial Knowledge
  • Demonstrable skills in risk assessment and management
  • Knowledge of evidence‑based interventions with service users with learning disabilities
  • Experience of supervising junior staff and student nurses
  • Ability to identify and positively influence social factors affecting mental distress
  • Up‑to‑date clinical knowledge including dual diagnosis and health and social care needs
Personal Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to undertake all statutory and mandatory training, including Positive Behavioural Management (PBM)/Breakaway (subject to Occupational Health clearance)
  • Approachable and flexible
  • Work effectively under pressure and problem‑solve in often chaotic and complex situations
  • Engage positively with service users and work effectively as a team member
  • Assimilate new concepts and approaches to care

Salary: £31,049 to £46,580 per annum (pro rata)
